Book Description

January 11, 2006
Third-Culture Kids Unite! Children love to read books about kids like themselves. The Adventure Begins is the first picture book written especially for elementary-aged Third-Culture Kids.

This book chronicles the ups and downs of living life overseas as a young global nomad. From transition issues such as moving to a new country, making friends, attending an international school, coping with change, and saying goodbye, The Adventure Begins allows littler TCKs to finally have their own voice in the experience of living "among worlds."

In recent years, many parents and caregivers of TCKs have accessed books about the repatriation process. Little emphasis however has been placed on the experience of actually living as a young Third-Culture Kid. With an introductory letter to the reader describing the ways TCKs are connected, and a closing letter considering how this unique group could change the world, The Adventure Begins allows for new dialogue about what it means to be a TCK.

Welcoming students, parents, and educators into the lives of young Third Culture Kids, The Adventure Begins is the first book in the Detinu International School series aimed at connecting TCKs around the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Living or moving overseas with young children? Buy this book!, December 14, 2007
This review is from: The Adventure Begins: First Day at Detinu International School (Paperback)

If you are raising children in overseas schools, this book will give your young children a way to remember their first day. If you (or your friend or relative) are going overseas for the first time, this book will give you and your young children a glimpse of what their first day in their new school could look like. The warmth with which students are accepted, their diverse backgrounds and languages, and the resources available in good international schools are clearly pictured. The relationships that develop quickly are very realistic.

The book is written for a young reader, so it's a great way to read aloud or to encourage emerging literacy. It's the first children's book I've seen with a theme centered around international schools. Although the book is in English, the message is for all nationalities.

The Adventure Begins is very compact, colorful and portable... just right for your carry-on. By itself, this book is not complete. Hopefully it is the beginning of a series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely perfect, September 16, 2011

This review is from: The Adventure Begins: First Day at Detinu International School (Paperback)
Should be required reading for every international primary classroom on the first day of school. Absolutely spot-on. It really meets a need for explicitly addressing TCK issues in terms young people can understand.
