This book had been personalized with a boy's name enscripted on the cover and this was not revealed in the description or I otherwise would not have purchased this particular bible because it was a gift. Description only stated used and good condition, which it is in good condition and it did arrive in a very fast turnaround time. But I would not have selected this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for family devotions, November 30, 2000

This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
My 11 year old son has this Bible and we use it to do our family devotions. There are 'Lets Live It' sections that point out a specific Bible passage and then ask some questions to solidify our understanding and make the Bible relevent to our lives today.

Other attractive qualities include "did you know?",with definitions of difficult terms, "words to remember" and "Bible times" all geared to increase undrestanding of God's word. There are also brightly colored pages with the ten commandments, 12 disciples and other important information. There are also maps in the back.

I would recommend it for anyone from 8-15 and parents like it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bible, NIV, Revised, November 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
An excellent gift Bible for middle elementary young people which will carry them into their teen years. Excellent pictures, explanatory notes, and guides for young readers. The teachers in our church school enjoy working with it, and the students are actually reading it at home and bringing it to church with them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entices Kids to Read It, March 20, 2004
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
I bought this bible for my 10-year-old nephew, who doesn't like to read and is always put off by thick books with few pictures. Because this bible is geared for young people and also has a provocative title, my nephew is more likely to open it up, or at least sit with me while we read it together. I like the approach this bible takes in presenting scripture as an "adventure" and it seems to attract my nephew as well. And, not insignificantly, this version is priced right too. I bought him the paperback edition thinking that I will get him a nice leather-bound bible when he is older and more prepared to take care of a finely bound copy. All in all, a very good bible for a young person.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best-Selling English-Language Bible for Children, January 6, 2005
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
The Adventure Bible is the best-selling English-language Bible for children--and with good reason, for it offers a host of sidebar and special page annotations specifically designed to appeal to children between the ages of eight and twelve. These highlights include "Life In Bible Times," "People In Bible Times," "Words to Treasure" (popular verses), "Did You Know?" and "Let's Live It!" (suggested activities.) These not only amplify the text, but create a colorful layout that make the pages more attractive to children.

Even so, the designation of THE ADVENTURE BIBLE as "a kid's Bible" is a little misleading; this is not a collection of Bible stories, but a full translation of the Protestant-recognized texts from Genesis to Revelations. Both language and content can be quite complex, and quite frankly I am no great fan of the NIV translation itself, which I find questionable in certain aspects. Whatever the case, it will be an unusual child indeed who can tackle this material on his or her own; parental assistance will be indispensible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful source of auxiliary Bible information, June 10, 2007

To clarify some things -- I am the daughter of the owner of this amazon account. I, however, felt obliged to write a review of this Bible. I was given this Bible as a gift when I was years younger, but I probably only read several pages. At that time I do remember feeling that the editors overly simplified things for children (As a child, I disliked anything directed to children--I had distaste for the Bible immediately when I saw the title, "The Adventure Bible"), but I had no understanding of the Bible, and I did not know what was truly written in it. Now, however, I enjoy reading this Bible, because I have matured to where I am not bothered by the graphics and wordings aimed toward children, but can apply it to my own life. I am 16 (I started reading the Bible at 15), and I find that much of the supplementary information is very helpful in my overall understanding of the entire Bible. It has allowed me to grow in many ways. It provides information on the meanings behind the Hebrew words, cultural trends of the age, shows facts about Biblical research, including dates, measurements, places, individuals, etcetera. . . It also gives advice by taking examples from the Bible.

In first chapter of Genesis, it says in a 'Did You Know?' section that the Bible word create means to make or to begin something new. I find that that there is a wealth of information. Let me give you another example: in Matthew chapter 23 there is a 'Life in Bible Times' section at the bottom of the page that says, "When Jewish men prayed, many tied special boxes containing Bible verses to their arm and forehead. These were called phylacteries (fa-LAC-ter-eez). Jesus criticized men who did this as a way to make people think they were especially holy."

This is referring to Matthew 23:5, where it only says "Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long. ." I would not have understood if not for the commentary. It is truly great Bible! It is also my aunt's favorite Bible. In almost every page there is something they add that efficiently helps the reader learn and understand. It is just as much for adults as for children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible - NOT a children's story Bible, November 16, 2006
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
We bought this Bible for our 8 year old son last Christmas and have to admit, it's a very nice Bible. However, having said that, I have to question the age range "assigned" to this version. Aside from the sidebars and "extras" throughout the Bible, which are definitely appealing to kids, the Bible is a straight NIV translation -it doesn't differ from my Women's NIV devotional Bible, nor my husband's NIV Bible. It is because of this I give the Bible 4 stars...only because the vast majority of young kids/early teens are going to have a difficult time grasping much of the translation's meaning without an adult's assistance. This is not a bad thing! It's a great way to learn and grow in God's word together, however, this is probably not the best choice for a student's personal study Bible. Still....it does have "kid appeal" -and I would definitely recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
As Christian Ed Coordinator at our church, I have purchased these Bibles for our students going into 3rd grade for the past 8 years. They are kid friendly, and have wonderful little sidebar items that are helpful to both the students and the teachers in the elementary Sunday School classes. Amazon's price, even with shipping, beat my local suppliers hands down. Thanks, Amazon, for helping out. I'll definitely be a repeat customer when I have to order more Bibles!

Thanks,
Julie S.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bible, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Adventure Bible, Revised, NIV (Hardcover)
I have two daughters, ages 6 and 8 and this is the perfect Bible for them. It is easy to read and understand. It opens the Bible to children in a way that is approachable. If they can't understand it then they won't want to read it. This Adventure Bible in the NIV translation is great.
