4.0 out of 5 stars May not be appropriate for all denominations
Providing a Bible translation for young readers is a great idea. Like most "study Bibles," however, this one contains supplemental material which is based upon the editors' beliefs and may or may not agree with a particular view of Scripture-- usually not a problem, because comparing your own beliefs and someone else's with what God has actually said can help...

3.0 out of 5 stars Full-Color Illustrations? Where?
One of the main reasons we bought this Bible for our son, besides the fact that he needed a version he could read on his own, was because the jacket advertized "full-color illustrations". But this is not true. The illustrations are two-color ink, and the text is typed in a mint green---not easy on the eyes! We ended up returning this Bible to the store for a more...

Providing a Bible translation for young readers is a great idea. Like most "study Bibles," however, this one contains supplemental material which is based upon the editors' beliefs and may or may not agree with a particular view of Scripture-- usually not a problem, because comparing your own beliefs and someone else's with what God has actually said can help you grow-- but for the young children that are the intended audience here, this edition may be a source of confusion. Critical thinking is generally not a skill common to a 6-10 year old child. Finding a lack of agreement between what he has been taught and what he has read can be disturbing. For example, if you have been taught that baptism is an immersion in water, an act of obedience to God, for the remission of sins, you might be disturbed to find this definition for baptism in the glossary of this Bible: "to sprinkle, pour or cover a person with water as a sign that the person belongs to Jesus Christ." For many denominations, of course, such a definition makes perfect sense, but since not every point of doctrine is the same for every group, it would be a good idea to know what you're giving to your child.

This edition, by the way, was not produced by the NIV committee-- some of the same members worked on it, but not all. That may be the reason why some of the words added to the actual text (in an attempt to clarify ideas for young readers) may bear subtle bias or even be confusing in themselves. In one place, part of I John 4:7 was changed from "he who loves is born of God," to "anyone who loves is born again because of what God has done." I'm not quite sure that's the same idea... but I could be wrong.

Overall, of course, this book is great for kids who want to learn from the real Bible by reading it themselves, and not just from some illustrated storybook. Before you buy it for your own child, however, you might to do as the Bereans did in Acts 17, and "examine the Scriptures" for yourself to see if what the editors have added to the text has not added to or taken away from the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Children's Bibles!, October 19, 2000
By
Eric Miller (Kent, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventure Bible for Young Readers, NIrV, The (Paperback)
"Mom, do I HAVE to read the Bible?" Many parents have heard that question more than once. Why? Because until recently, there have been few Bibles that invoke the curiosity of children as this Bible has.

I am a Children's Ministry Director from the state of Washington, and have had the privilege to work with children for about five years now. One of the greatest things that breaks my heart is to see a child not interested in one of the greatest books of all-time: the Bible. Many children will not bring a Bible to church for one of two reasons: they either don't have one, or the one they have is too difficult for them to understand.

The Adventure Bible for Young Readers is not only phrased in such a way that children can understand it, but it is visually appealing to children ages 6 to 12. I purchased this Bible a little over a month ago, and even I can't put it down! It's easy to understand and fun to read! The NIrV has become the standard I use for teaching kids (ages first through sixth grades).

If your child enjoys reading their current Bible as much as they enjoy taking medicine, then this Bible is a must-have for your household!

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Man loves his bible, January 18, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Adventure Bible for Young Readers, NIrV, The (Paperback)
I bought this bible for my 5 year old. After much research and many trips to various book and Christian book stores, I finally settled on this bible. It's language and manner are such that a young child can read and understand the concept of God's love without "dumbing it down". It's not the children's bible of old, which usually is a regular bible with pictures in it. This bible actually contains sections about life in bible times and a synopsis of the books of the bible with a short summary about main theme of each book. There are also question and answer sections scattered thoughout that have a scripture reading assignment and then it suggests brief activities that your child can do to help realize that God is working in their lives all the time. My son especially loves the "Did you know" pieces. It's a very interactive bible, but the activities only help to strengthen the integrity of the Bible and it's teachings. This bible is exactly what I was searching for

5.0 out of 5 stars Exploring the bible together..., November 8, 2007
By
CaPaGrl (Mill Hall, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventure Bible for Young Readers, NIrV, The (Paperback)
My son selected this bible at the Christian bookstore because a friend of his at Pioneer Club owns the same one. We compared several different bibles, but this is the one he kept coming back to. Apparently he knew something I didn't... but I sure discovered it later that night!

I rarely attended church while growing up and even less in my adult life. My son is 8 years old and only been in a church for Sunday service twice in his life. He's only been in Pioneer Club for about 5 weeks (and missed two nights). When he asked me if we could get him a bible, I readily agreed. We talked about whether or not he was a Christian and whether or not he'd accepted Jesus as his personal savior - he informed me that he was Christian and yes, he has a personal relationship with Jesus. Wow. I had no idea!

Anyway, when the bible came home, we started looking it over together. I had to admit that I never knew most of the information on the first two pages! What a humbling experience. That night, my son & I said our prayers together for the first time ever. My son cannot wait to read more of his bible. Why is this so amazing to me? Because he's dyslexic and 99% of his life is spent avoiding reading or anything resembling reading. But when he picks up this bible, he loves learning, hearing the stories and reading the little side notes (he lets me do most of the reading, but I have convinced him to read the interesting side information - and he does, in order to hear more of the stories).

Definitely a great starting point for any child or adult to learn the basics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read with plenty of great features, September 26, 2007
By

This review is from: Adventure Bible for Young Readers, NIrV, The (Paperback)
Not available in little ol' UK so shipped this over the pond - that's a measure of how impressed I was with this product...

This is the "adventure bible" but with the NIrV text (NIV readers edition). It is the FULL bible (not a story bible).

The NIrV has a reading age of between 6 and 10 years and I found it much more understandable than the Good News or ICB (International Childrens Bible) and my daughter is thriving on it. The translation seems to be great as well - when we found we could understand Romans we knew we were onto a winner!

The adventure bible has all the extra features detailed elsewhere but in summary:

"Life in Bible Times" helps kids understand what it was like to live in Bible times.

"People in Bible Times" helps readers to sort out Zechariah from Zacchaeus, Joseph from Joash.

"Words to Treasure" highlights popular verses for kids to memorize.

"Did You Know?" points out many of the interesting facts and figures found in the Bible.

"Let's Live It!" suggests activities, such as playing games and drawing pictures to reinforce the Bible lessons.

A Dictionary/concordance for those tricky words.

Book Introductions for basic facts about each book of the Bible (who wrote it, where it took place, and why it was written

Full-color pages throughout with more interesting information about the Bible and what it means to be a Christian.

Highly recommended by my daughter (aged 7) and me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bible, especially for children a little older than 4-7, September 17, 2007
My daughter is in first grade and is a solid reader for her age group, but this Bible is still a little too grownup for her. We have the Zonderkidz The Beginnners Bible and that's the one she rather read. But for learning how to navigate a "grownup" Bible, this one is great and it should last us for many, many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Bible Keeps the Young Readers Attention, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Adventure Bible for Young Readers, NIrV, The (Paperback)
Much easier for the young reader than the traditional NIV. The Young Reader translation helps to keep the child's attention and works best for family Bible reading time.
