Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up-- This book should be a required text for all high school students . The authors encourage readers to define their dreams for the future and then outline possible steps to take toward achieving them. In the first chapter, they state that ``the career ladder has been--or ought to be--replaced by a career jungle gym, a three-dimensional structure offering many paths, both lateral and vertical''; they contend that ``adventure careers are built out of many, varied experiences.'' The second chapter includes worksheets to help teens determine--and periodically reassess--their appropriate career paths. Each of the ten chapters that follows has an annotated directory and suggestions for further reading, as well as personal accounts and/or advice related to the topic. At different times, the authors address pre-, post- and current college readers, but the guidelines are appropriate for all ages. Adventure Careers discussed are in the fields of volunteer/ community service, entrepreneurship, the arts, politics, travel, ecology, spiritual work, and wilderness management. Encouraging YAs ``not to think of learning and working as two separate activities,'' the book suggests many unconventional sources for education, often identifying the costs, prerequisites, and restrictions. The final chapter provides information regarding funding and travel. This is a career book for the '90s that will serve as a reference tool as well as for individual reading. --Dona Weisman, Northeast Texas Library System, Garland
