Spirou and Fantasio's friend, the Count of Champignac, asks them to join him in Australia, where he has heard that an ancient monolith is still standing. When they arrive, Champignac's colleague Walker Donahue informs them that Champignac has been abducted by local gangster Sam. The monolith they're after stands in the vicinity of an aboriginal mining village, which is constantly prey to white prospectors trying to steal indigenous resources. Spirou and Fantasio must save Champignac from Sam's clutches and help him find the legendary monolith while standing by the aboriginal people.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7 Longtime Franco-Belgian comic characters Spirou and Fantasio, globe-trotting journalists forever finding themselves in hot water, journey to Australia in their U.S. debut. Page layouts are traditional and easy to follow Janry's old-school cartoon style highlights the exaggerated slapstick action. Aboriginal Australians are treated respectfully at least as respectfully as any of the other characters, who include shady opal prospectors, a daffy French count, and his beleaguered scientific assistant. The humor can be extra-broad: an Aboriginal shaman (shown on the cover) is frequently pictured meditating in midair with both middle fingers upraised. Adventure Down Under was published in France in the 1980s, but shows little signs of age. Tintin and Asterix fans will be drawn to this colorful, fast-paced adventure, and manga fans may go for it, too. Paula Willey, Baltimore County Public Library, Towson, MD

Four stars because it IS a Spirou and Fantasio adventure, BUT why aren't these graphic novels published in order? Readers are missing out on the beginning of this most excellent and funny series... Also this was NOT the best Spirou adventure I have read. It's a pity that the first one published in the US (except for Z for Zorglub, that was released by Fantasy Flight way back) is not up to par with Franquin's and Fournier's stories! :(

It all started with Franquin who created nineteen adventures. Followed by Fournier who created nine, (one adventure in the middle there was by Franquin, Roba, Will and Greg). Moving on to Nic and Cauvin who only made three. First then after Thirty-Two adventures enters Tome and Janry who yes, made fourteen installments! The current author and illustrator are Morvan and Munuera, who to date have released three.... There has been Forty-Nine adventures published in French with five additional editions on the side (the Hors and Intégrales editions by Franquin, Chaland, Fournier, Jijé et al.).

So, can someone explain to me why the above mentioned authors and illustrators are being ignored? This is as far as I'm concerned, the best Belgian comic ever released (of course opinions on this vary, only my humble opinion here). How can this series ever catch on like Tintin or Asterix have if it never even gets a solid chance?

Anyhow, I'm still thrilled to see one out and hopefully there will be more to follow... :D
