These are not your ordinary travel titles. Written by women who are longtime Texas residents, they are attractive, well-organized books conveniently arranged by region. Abbott, a native Texan, an award-winning journalist, and the author of Texas: Travel-Smart (John Muir, 1998), specializes in romantic getaways. She aims at out-of-state visitors and Texans of all ages, basing her choice of destinations, sights, restaurants, and accommodations on merit. Recognizing that what qualifies as a romantic escape is different for everyone, she covers everything from luxury urban hotels to remote cabins in the woods. Many resources are included, as well as addresses, phone numbers, web sites, hours, and prices. Young, managing editor of Insurance Journal, a trade magazine, also grew up in Texas. Her book focuses on active things to do outdoors, treating an area that other travel books, like Joe Cummings's Texas Handbook (Moon Pub., 1998), do not cover in depth. Besides the usual hiking and biking, she includes hot air-balloon rides, skydiving, rock climbing, and more. Young is both thorough, providing information on accommodations, history, and weather, and fun to read.
