4.0 out of 5 stars A definite improvement over the first April 26, 2010
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
There's mot that much difference between this game and the first - you run around on an island, beating bosses, collecting fruit so you don't run out of energy, avoiding monsters, and the like.

However, this game is a improvement over the first. Graphics are more cleaned up and colorful, but that is the least of the improvements. The same fruit=life scheme is used here, but it feels like more thought was put into it. It seemed that in this game, I had a easier time getting fruit to keep alive, and though there ARE some levels where fruit is scarce and you have to move fast, this game is not as frustrating as the first one. You also have dinosaurs to ride (each with their own ability) and a skateboard. The bosses are also more varied.

Again, the graphics are improved. Granted, graphics don't have that much of a impact on gameplay, but compared to this one, the first one had rather ugly graphics. The colors here are vivid and the backgrounds are pleasing to look at and more well-defined. You also get a chance here and there to warp and skip islands (there's eight in all, each with a different theme like volcano, jungle, desert, etc)

If you found the first game to be a bit hard to enjoy, try this one. It's a definite improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars A franchise that should NOT be missed. :) May 30, 2014
Having been a Mario and Zelda fan for so long, I wanted to try a different kind of platform game that was somewhat out of the realm. Enter the Adventure Island series. You are Master Higgins, and it is up to you to hop and bop through 8 "worlds". Adventure Island 2 is one of THE best non-Mario games for several reasons.

What may attract you the most is the euphoric, bouncy soundtrack. That feature, alone, will keep you playing this game for hours on end (and even add some further replay value). The graphics have also been updated/improved from the first installment. Master Higgins can use a hammer, skateboard, and even some new dinosaur friends to help him progress through every level. There are also some secret exits in certain areas, which allows you to explore other levels in a more non-linear fashion. Eventually, though, you will find yourself facing 8 bosses -- each one more difficult than the last. There are 4 dinosaur friends in all to acquire:

Spade: The Blue Dinosaur helps you walk on ice without slipping.

Diamond: The Purple Dinosaur helps you glide through water.

Heart: The Red Dinosaur allows you to walk on lava without losing a life.

Clover: The Pterodactyl lets you fly through each level while dropping stones on enemies.

Be aware, though, that if Master Higgins gets hit while riding a dinosaur or skateboard, he will lose it, but not his life. Adventure Island 2 is a fairly difficult, yet satisfying game. You do NOT want to miss out on this series, so it's time to start downloading it to your Wii/Wii U and let the good times begin! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Classic! August 10, 2013

I remember every time that I would visit the local video store in my small hometown, I would always rent this one....and Mega Man 3. The game even, 20 years down the road has some excellent qualities in it's simplistic design and programming. I consider myself a retro gamer and am not too familiar or concerned with the more up to date systems, and I prefer games such as these, not only for nostalgic purposes, but sometimes, simple games are just what you need. Not knocking ones that may have more of a problem solving, advanced game play. If you're a fan of the retro NES and it's library, Adventure Island II is definitely one must have. Your kids will enjoy too.
