As a civilian contractor in Afghanistan this book and a well stocked medical kit, Appendix B, are essential items. Be sure to get the third edition, which contains current CPR protocols, as of October 2010 when I took CPR for the Professional from the Red Cross of America.

Way beyond first aid, Mac Gyver style. Comprehensive overview and how to of trauma care when you're ignorant, under equipped, and desperate. Don't leave home without it.

I'll agree with everyone else who's reviewed this and say that Dr. Weiss wrote a very good little book on Wilderness Medicine. I say small because at 4" x 6" x 1/2" it is a perfect size to go in your med kit. I have two now and I very often take them out to read and review random sections. The Weiss Advice tips are great and sprinkled throughout the book. He also highlights "When to Worry" excerpts that let you know when you better start working on an evac plan. While this book doesn't always go into the "why" things are happening it sure does cover a great deal of "what to do" and "how to do". I've only had occasion to pull this out once while in the field but it did come in handy helping to diagnose a broken arm (spiral fracture near the wrist).

Nice read, this book provides some excellent insight that you can use anytime from a simple day hike to an extended hiking trip. I keep this book in my B.O.B for quick reference.
