4.0 out of 5 stars If you can only buy one., January 9, 2010

This review is from: Adventure Medical Kits S.O.L. Survival Pak (Misc.)
I have just bought my second kit of this type. I like it better then most pocket survival kits near this price for one reason. This kit has a heatsheet survival blanket, with duct tape inside and covers most of what you need in one package. Add a Adventure Medical first aid kit and you are set. BUT!!! I expect the person carrying this to have at least one magnesium fire steel and a good pocket knife or multi-tool with them at all times. You can get a Victroinox Swiss champ plus at a good price if you shop around. Leatherman or Gerber cost a little more but are worth the price. How much is your life worth? What would you pay to live another few years? I bet more then the price of a Leatherman. You can get a Mora knife for under $20.00 dollars. You can pick up adjustable flame lighters at any store for a Dollar. If I like this kit so much why only 4 stars? I believe the company could add a few things to improve it and not raise the price much over a couple bucks. A Fresnel lens, folding utility knife, clear oven bag to carry water and some snare wire. But even as is this is one great kit and a very good deal for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to have on hand, just in case, August 20, 2008

The rather funny name for this item aside, it is a serious kit for times when things get dicey.
It is very small, and supposedly waterproof, though I will have to take this on faith for now. I suggest a full first aid kit for true emergencies, but this one is small and light enough for the backpack or car glove box.
When used as a part of a more comprehensive survival kit, this little bag of tricks is well worth the money.

I am giving this kit ***** and you guys know that I am a tough grader for survival kits. But this one is great. First of all, it has a Heatsheet blanket instead of a cheapie.

It also have a LOUD whistle and a small but serious signal mirror for signaling. Assuimg you keep a little LED flashlight on your keyring, zipperpull, etc, then you're set for signaling.

For firemaking it has a small pack of waterproof matches and some Tinderquick, which I grade highly. I'd add a flint firestarter, but still, it's pretty good.

The kit also has a mini-roll of duct-tape for zillions of uses, even first aid. There's also a small button compass, not all that useful, but it doesn't take up any weight or space.

Finally it has a mini fishing kit, with 4 large safety pins included. Those can be very handy for lots of things. In reality, a fishing kit isn't going to be a huge help in most cases, but it can be relaxing to dip a line, so why not? An idea here might be to remove one of the safety pins and put a Exacto blade in there instead. Of course, if you do so, it will not pass TSA.

They assume (and I hope) that you are carrying a decent knife, and some sort of 1st aid kit. If you aren't, there is room in the bag to add a few Band-aids and a one use packet of Neosporin.

What I like most is the bag. Not only is it watertight and resealable, but it fits perfectly and comfortably in a deep pocket, and thus you will actually take this kit with you. No kit, no matter how complete- is any use if you don't have it there where the sitrep occurs.

I also think that this kit may be acceptable to the TSA (rules and interpretations vary), so it would make a good travel kit, too.

I have many different types of survival kits similar to this one but so far think this is the best on the market for the price and the items contained within. Another great product from AMK.
