I bought this bivy at the beginning of summer in hopes of using it for backpacking. Haha, that notion didn't last long.
This bivy sack is very durable, I have slept on beds of sticks and rocks and it hasn't shown any sign of ripping.
It is also extremely light! About the weight of a feather or two, not a hindrance at all on the trail.
As far as warmth goes, unless you are sleeping right next to a fire, I say that the 50 degree comfort rating is about right. I have taken this bag all the way down to high thirties, and I won't do it again, even with long underwear on it was really cold. When I took it out hiking and it got down to the mid forties it was also a bit chilly, but bearable. Anything above the mid forties is comfortable.
I now keep it in my survival pack, and also take it on all my hikes as a backup to my sleeping bag. If you put this bivy over your thirty degree sleeping bag you can probably go down to twenty degrees or so.
So I wouldn't replace my sleeping bag with this product, but it is a great option for an emergency sleeping bag as it is advertised.

I was very impressed with this. I was on a survival course weekend, and did not have a regular sleeping bag. This item is very light weight and kept me so warm that I ended up sleeping on top of it for one of the nights.

It reflects a lot of body heat. Even if you are not going to use this as a sleeping bag (as I did). If you are in a tent and unfold it to use as a ground mat, you will be amazed what a difference it makes to the temperature. Keep one of these in your car / backpack. Takes up a lot less space than a blanket and does offer some water resistance if you need to use it as a shelter in the rain.

Every hiking / camping / motorcycle trip, this is going with me

Note: Please read this whole review before making up your mind about this product!

I got the SOL Thermal Bivvy a few days ago at a gear shop, and decided to test it out that night. It looked great, but as soon as I tried to get in, it promptly ripped at one of the seams. I was a little disappointed with the rip, so I got in contact with Adventure Medical Kits and explained the situation, as well as sent them a picture of the rip.

What happened after that was what helped earn the 5 star review. AMK was fast to respond, gracious, and completely understanding. They explained that the rip was uncommon, and that they really appreciated my business, as well as the picture that they could forward to their quality control department. They also said that they would happily ship me a replacement bag - they did not ask for the old bag back, or for me to pay for shipping on the new bag. Sam at AMK in customer service was very understanding, and left me with complete faith in AMK as a company.

In my short lived testing of the bag, I did note that it is toasty, and roomy (big enough for my 6' 6" frame), and my wife loves the idea of an add-on bag that can help extend the temp. ranges of our 20 and 40 degree bags (as well as provide a warm sleeping bag on a cold night). I plan to reinforce the bag with rip-stop light weight nylon when it comes in, but even on its own, I would happily recommend it to anyone.

AMK: Thanks for being great!

This emergency bivvy sack is exactly what it claims to be - for emergencies. If you are planning on extended exposure in harsh enviroments, this product isn't for you. However, if you need a sufficient, bare bones way to stay warm during an emergency or unexpected night in the wilds, this is the ticket.
Where this product shines is it's weight-to-warmth ratio. Weighing less than a pound, and having the size of roughly two fists, this is an excellent addition to any bug out bag or vehicle emergency kit. This product alone should not be considered a sleeping system, but rather an enhancement to your current system, or used in conjuction with bush craft skills that lend themselves to keeping a person warm.

We were in the boundary waters for a week. After three solid days of rain all of our gear had gotten soaked, including my down sleeping bag. On the final night the temperatures started to drop and I was not looking forward to spending the night in a wet bag with wet clothes, but I really had no choice. Fortunately my friend had one of these emergency bivys with him. I put it inside my wet sleeping bag and it kept me mostly dry for most of the night. One problem is it does not breath so your sweat gets you very wet. I was far warmer than I would have otherwise been and ended up getting a few hours sleep, a horrible cold night was made tolerable. I am definitely going to take one of these along next year.

After 3 days of use as an ultralight sleep system in warm weather, I got a few tears in the bivy and decided that it did not pass my test. As a backup to a regular sleep system, it works fine.

I love to visit the jungle and if you do not have a hammock you definitely have to sleep on the ground, which is not safe, so uncomfortable and dangerous.
But if you have no choice , this sleeping bag is the perfect solution, unlike the traditional sleeping bags (large, bulky, heavy and impractical) this friend is quite the opposite, but it would never let you unprotected against the cold.
It is very practical and durable, constructed with great quality.
Though it takes a little practice and effort to return to its original size packaging is the best option with which you could have in an emergency or survival situation.
The carry bag is very useful and practical
