Book Description

Novella Series September 1, 2007
Heir to the Hipster line of rabbinical leaders and sages, eleven year old Micah Mushmelon enlists Shraga Potasznik, the comic-book-addicted protagonist of this novella to make good of all things worthwhile in this world. An heir to the rich modern Yiddish literary tradition, Michael Wex paints a vivid, hilarious picture of the hasidic demimonde. His is a view into Yiddish culture at once erudite and super hip, and always true to the cadences of a language that informs so much of modern North American culture.

for lovers of language there are few things more entertaining than Michael Wex --Gregory McNamee, Reuters Billboard

About the Author

Michael Wex was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, the last brittle sprout of a Polish rabbinic tree. He spent his early orthodox Jewish childhood surrounded by a 40% Mormon population. Coming back to Yiddish during the revival of the 1980s after realising that his career as a Medievalist was not going to pay the rent, Wex soon discovered that Yiddish wasn t either. He drove cabs, worked in Tim Horton s, taught English, was a stand-up and finally got a break a couple of years ago. An overnight success at the age of 52, he has a New York Times bestselling book on the subject entitled Born to Kvetch.

More About the Author

Author of Born to Kvetch, columnist, bon vivant and raconteur, Michael Wex has been called "a Yiddish national treasure;" Born to Kvetch, the bestselling book ever written about Yiddish, was hailed by The New York Times as "wise, witty and altogether wonderful."

A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, Wex has worked in virtually every area of contemporary Yiddish. Some of his songs have been recorded by such klezmer bands as Sukke, The Flying Bulgars, and 2007 Grammy winners, The Klezmatics.

Wex's teaching and lecture activities-a unique combination of learning, stand-up comedy and probing investigation into the nature of Yiddish and Yiddishkayt-have taken him from Toronto to Budapest, and to many points in between. His approach is so unique and appealing that his annual series of classes at Klezkamp (a yearly Yiddish cultural event in upstate New York) has been renamed Wexology-and not at Wex's instigation. The only complaint ever heard is that people are enjoying themselves so much that they forget to take notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars News from Hipst, October 21, 2007
This review is from: The Adventure of Micah Mushmelon, Boy Talmudist (Novella Series) (Paperback)
When I read this book for the first time tears were running down my cheeks from laughing so hard. It's probably the wildest adventure I ever read in fiction, and I read a lot. It's an unbelievable plot happening to young Shraga Potasznik who not only has to save the world and comes to discover that he had offended a saint in heaven before he was even born. He has to put up with the fact that his personal enemy, disguised as a rabbi, is the greatest threat to God and only Shraga himself can stop him and save His entire Creation. There's only one who can help him, one who actually knows him from way before when they were still studying in the heavenly yeshiva that no one ever remembers -- except for Micah Mushmelon, Boy Talmudist. It is impossible to give even a slight insight into the fun deriving from a book that could as well come as a comic strip epos. There is nothing more hip than the Hipster chassidim and their congregation called Shoymer Pesoyim -- Protector of the Idiots. This is a wild mixture of both orthodox Yiddish (proved by the talmud) and American culture working hand in hand to produce one giant laughter. The story of the Hipster dynasty includes the limbo as well as the conga line, Charlie Parker, "der foygl," almost ends up with a nice job in the Hipsters' choire, the Mormon Tabernacle Choire refuses to reside in a Sukke (a shack covered with leaves for a Jewish holiday), and evil Les Dean utters convalescence by humming "Guantanamera." Not to mention Tess and Tisha Buvv who both shake the walls of Shraga's fading temple of childhood. This is a great book, and if Sawyer and Finn had been Jewish they'd have had fun like Micah and Shraga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny...until...., December 2, 2008

At least half of this book is incredibly funny, mainly the first half. But the offer veers off into weird sexual "adventures" that are not funny and not interesting. Basically, pointless. A pity Mr. Wex wasted his talent at this close of this really clever book. I don't understand why he would have done so much damage.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just didn't get it!, May 27, 2010

I must admit that while I enjoyed several of Michael Wex's other works a lot, I just felt like I didn't get this book at all. It is possible that my cultural background is just too different from the author's or that we simply have a different sense of humor. I never felt (as I otherwise often do) that I wanted to share a particular section with my wife or anyone else. Too bad, but this book just did not hit the spot for me.
