The authors, Diane Bair and Pamela Wright, introduce 77 adventures throughout New England. In the "Canoeing" chapter, you'll find a six-day trip down the Allagash, a camp-and-canoe jaunt in Maine's North Woods, wild-water running in New Hampshire, an inn-based canoe ramble along the Winooski River, and a women-only hike-and-paddle in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. There are chapters devoted to kayaking and windjamming, sailing and fishing, hiking and horse packing, mountain biking, rock climbing, scuba diving, gliding, skiing, and hot-air ballooning. Each trip features contact information, details on how to get there, rates, maps, what to bring, the skill level required, plus several pages of narrative describing the authors' experience and giving a real feel for the adventure. And to assist with planning, the authors have also included individual maps that locate all the outdoor adventure options state by state. --Stephanie Gold

For Tour-lovers only!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Adventure New England: An Outdoor Vacation Guide (Paperback)
This book is a bit of a cop-out. The authors, instead of doing hard work exploring New England, simply went on lots of paid (or probably un-paid) organized tours averaging about $500-700 per three-day trip. They give you the name of a tour group and tell you about the tour that they went on. Well, that's not real useful. These are not authors who know this area intimately, extensively and over a long period of time. They haven't scouted out great bicycle trips or wonderful hikes. They left it to others to do that. These two published a book of organized trips that someone else developed. Save your money.

This review is from: Adventure New England: An Outdoor Vacation Guide (Paperback)
As an outdoor recreation lover and a lover of New England, this book is a perfect match for me. The authors did a great job offering up a large sampling of some of the best outdoor things to do in New England, organized by activity (canoeing/kayaking, hiking, sailing, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, etc) and by state. And they spread their research and suggestions around the entire region, all six states receive their attention. The information provided is thorough and helpful and fun. If you love outdoor recreation and New England get this book. Thanks Diane and Pamela! You did a great job.
