"The Adventure, Rip Squeak and Friends" is a wonderful, swashbuckling tale of mouse pirate Rip Squeak and friends, sister Jesse, her doll Bunny, Abbey the kitten and Euripides the frog. Aboard the pond ship the Adventure, Rip and crew encounter a scary, slimy pond monster. However, Rip climbs up a rope to view the submerged monster and manages to fall in the water, only to be note eaten, but rescued by the scary pond monster. It turns out his name is Salvadore and he is not really so scary after all, thanks to a brave discovery by the bold Rip Squeak. The Adventure and her crew are eventually reconciled with their captain and introduced to Salvadore, who becomes their new friend. "The Adventure, Rip Squeak and Friends" is beautifully illustrated with paintings of ship, crew, and monster/friend Salvadore. Children ages 6 and up will love this colorful ship story.

While the illustrations are wonderful, I felt the story was not well-done for a child. It was neither depthful nor so child-like that a child could related to it.

When I read it, I feel like the illustrations came first and the story came after just to fill in the blanks. The writing isn't smooth...it's not easy to read and there seems to be a lot of filler language. It's one of the few books I've read to my 4-yr old that I just want to skip sentences because they don't make sense or don't seem to add to the story. :(
