This work provides an overview of the "backcountry" possibilities in Latin America, with an emphasis on mountaineering and backpacking. The environmental pitch is strong, and the advice frank and sound (e.g., avoid El Salvador and much of Colombia). Once a destination is chosen, a more detailed single-nation guidebook will be needed, and Graham recommends some--the Lonely Planet series (perhaps the best of this genre), George Bradt's guidebooks (e.g., Backpacking . . . in Peru & Bolivia) , and Michael Shichor's "Michael's Walking Guides" (the last two are distributed by Hunter Pubs., 293 S. Beach Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455). Graham also lists a directory of travel agencies specializing in adventure tours.
