Grade 4-8AThis attractive and accessible book presents basic information about the history of archaeology around the world, up to 1995. Although McGowen states that there is more to this science than the study of sites in Egypt, Italy, or Greece, the emphasis here remains on spectacular finds in Egypt and the Middle East. Mentions are made of sites in China, Africa, and the Americas, but they are not discussed at length. Each of the four chapters discusses a different approach that has led to archaeological discoveries, such as ancient written languages that had to be decoded before revealing their information, or what has been learned by studying mummified human remains from around the world. Excellent-quality full-color photographs, reproductions, and drawings add to readers' understanding, although some are not placed adjacent to the information they illustrate. Frequent sidebars provide additional interesting tangential facts and anecdotes. One map is included; it covers the area from Greece to India and shows the location of some of the ancient cities and kingdoms and modern countries.
