Book Description

April 1, 2009
Merle’s Door was a sensation because Ted Kerasote writes so beautifully about his dog and his dog’s love of the land. In Adventures wtih Ari, Kathryn Miles takes a step back from the wild places Kerasote describes. When she adopts Ari, an exotic Jindo dog, the two of them begin to explore the outdoors together. A dog sees the world quite differently from a person. For starters, he or she is much closer to the ground—to what we’ve been trying to preserve more and more of these days. A dog is the original environmental activist: The sights, sounds, and smells of nature are what make a dog a dog. And if you want to learn more about nature, try enjoying life like a dog.

Kathryn Miles sets out to do just that when she becomes determined to let Ari live life on her own terms. Once some basic ground rules are set, Kathryn takes the leash off her dog and the blinders off her own eyes. A new world soon emerges: She and Ari explore a backyard landscape of grass, mud, snow, trees, and the occasional fox. They find the scent of a northern wind, the footprints of a startled raccoon, and other secrets of the natural world. The puppy’s free-spirited outlook teaches Kathryn to see more when she might otherwise have seen less, while adding a certain excitement and clarity of vision. Soon, Kathryn begins to give up control and know the world as Ari learns it.

Peppered with factual information about our natural world and the creatures that inhabit it, Adventures with Ari makes compelling reading for dog lovers as well as anyone who’s been out and about in the woods. Like most projects of discovery, this process forces Kathryn to uncover much more than the physical—it allows important insight to her thoughts and feelings and her relationship with her entire family, all thanks to a puppy named Ari.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Charming, rich, intelligent...and best of all, on every page Kathryn Miles displays her love for Ari and dogs of every kind. I read it in one sitting! --Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of When Elephants Weep

After a few generations of losing touch with nature, our eyes don't work so well any more. So it's a fine idea to borrow another pair, especially if they're attached to a wet and useful nose. --Bill McKibben, author Deep Economy

Some discover nature through gardening, others through camping, and a rare few—such as Kathryn Miles—by gripping the end of a leash as the family dog reveals the great outdoors. --Hannah Holmes, author of The Well Dressed Ape: A Natural History of Myself

Exhilarating...a fascinating and fun read. This exploration of the role of dogs in our lives never ceases to surprise. Kathryn Miles's writing is masterful, clean and precise; and her narrative is upbeat. --Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dog Listener, March 24, 2009
By
Dianna Hunter (Chicago, Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventures with Ari: A Puppy, a Leash & Our Year Outdoors (Hardcover)
Going into a new book, especially an author's first book, I try to not have any expectations. It was even difficult getting to the first page, having been captured by the photos of Ari on the cover, back and even side of the book. That said, I was already baited to read about Ari's life. Mordecai Siegal said -Acquiring a dog may be the only opportunity a human ever has to choose a relative. How true that is, but I also feel our pets choose us. Reading how Kathryn Miles went from never owning a dog to being a reluctant doggie stepmother to an owner is a brilliant metamorphosis. Without giving too much away, Ari got her attention and approached her as if to say I'm the one! Ms. Miles listened and acquired what her own mother lovingly later referred to as her grand-dog. Ari leads the author bounding by leash and sometimes by hand through a world seen through her own blue eyes. Ari's enthusiasm and curiosity for life is to be admired and envied. Through the year we spend with her we experience joy, frustration, loss, patience, and heartache. The constant remains love. I admit to wiping some tears, laughing aloud, and reading parts aloud to my husband. The author is very funny. How many of us haven't thought of renaming our dog Puddles at some point? What is learned from this ball of fur makes me grateful to Ari and to my own pup. They know, see, and teach us more than it seems we could ever teach them. We just have to be present and listen. I'll end my review with a quote by another author I have found brilliant since childhood, that really says it all. Happiness is a warm puppy - Charles Schultz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a Canine Safari, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Adventures with Ari: A Puppy, a Leash & Our Year Outdoors (Hardcover)
Even with so many dog books out there to choose from, this one holds its own, mainly because of its seamless blend of biology and cultural history, all delivered through the intelligent and upbeat narrative voice of a true dog lover watching her true love blossom across her first year with this remarkable canine companion.

Miles coins the term "canine naturalism" and with it a unique perspective for anyone with an interest in environmental writing and coming to a better understanding of our natural world, starting from the fascinating wild creatures who share our homes. You'll fall in love with them both. I sure did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Informative, Inspiring..., April 8, 2009
This review is from: Adventures with Ari: A Puppy, a Leash & Our Year Outdoors (Hardcover)
Throughout this book, you will probably do at least one (if not all) of these things: laugh out loud, ponder thoughts philosophically, wipe away a tear (or two), retreat to the nearest nature space (or at least want to), be inspired to make a difference, pause to appreciate relationships (whether human or animal), investigate a new topic further, and more. By allowing us to join her in the month-by-month journey spent looking at life through the most beautiful ice-blue puppy dog eyes, Kathryn Miles helps us see that there is so much more to the world than our human perceptions.

This being said from a non-animal-loving reader - a most enjoyable book for all!
