Always answer "yes" and you are done,
By JLH Homeschooler (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventures With Atoms and Molecules: Chemistry Experiments for Young People - Book I (Adventures With Science) (Paperback)
I actually really have enjoyed the experiments, and my son has, too, for the most part, but I have to say that I'm disappointed that EVERY question posed for the experiment has the answer "YES." It doesn't take long to predetermine the answer (it's always "yes") and look for it or to try to force it.I agree with the other reviewers that the experiments are all very simple to perform (with one or two minor exceptions), and require basic materials easy to find at a grocery store. I have found them to be great learning lessons for simple observations and learning very basic chemistry, especially for children with minimal chemistry experience. However, I feel I must hide the book from my son so that he does not see the expected results in the simple drawings before our experiment is done. And again, I am unsure of the wisdom of posing questions that all have the same answer. That said, this book should probably be purely a teacher's guide and probably never shown to the child, which is not how I had first interpreted it.

Great, Great, Great!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Adventures With Atoms and Molecules: Chemistry Experiments for Young People - Book I (Adventures With Science) (Paperback)
This book is a great science book! It has some experiments that lots of kids will like! I rate this book four stars only because the pictures in the book aren't really good.

I used this text as the basis for teaching 2nd and 3rd grade elem. chemistry in our homeschool co-op. Some of the terms are "above" that level, but someone with a little science background or enjoyment will be able to explain them. I have been AMAZED at how quickly the kids picked up the concepts presented in this book- and feel that at the end of our course, they have a very solid foundation for chemistry and science. I made a basic "lab sheet" each week using the question for the title (though I reworded it to not be a yes/no question), materials list, procedure, observations, and conclusion. I tried to emphasize the scientific process and encourage them to hypothesize before we began. I grocery shopped for all the supplies before our semester began and everything was readily available. (This is a HUGE PLUS!) The students really have enjoyed the class each week (as have I!!!) and have grown so much in their synthesis of ideas, process, and scientific concepts. I am so pleased and am online looking for something similar to use for physics next semester! :)

Adventures with Atome & Molecules,
This review is from: Adventures With Atoms and Molecules: Chemistry Experiments for Young People - Book I (Adventures With Science) (Paperback)
This book is amazing and so easy to use. The items needed for the experiments are common to every household. I learned more teaching my students form this book than I did on high school chemistry. I highly recommend it!

This book has great simple experiments which my daughter and I have both been enjoying. We define the new science terminology in her science notebook and make a science prediction/observation/conclusion page as well. I generally don't let her read the experiment pages first because the answers to the question / what is going to happen are printed there too... takes some of the fun out of the experiment. I just read it and tell her what to do next. It works great for me and my homeschooled daughter of 9.

As we've used this book in our homeschool I've really liked the ease of the lessons. They're clear and I've had all the materials, so far, on hand. My kids can do the steps and they like the hands on learning. I like the simplicity!

Wonderful hands on chemistry experiments and lessons for children. I used it for 3rd grade chemistry in homeschool. The lessons are easy to follow and most experiments use materials you have around the house.

We are loving this book it has easy to do experiments that are fun yet simple enough to do without a lot of planning time. I would definetly recommend this book to others who are seeking a first glimpse into chemistry with young kids. I am currently using this book with my 5yr., 6 yr. and 8 yr. olds and they all are excited to do more experiments.
