"This simple, heart-felt children's book features a character anyone could relate to. This story can serve as a starting point for some important conversations between children and the adults who love and care for them ... because there's a little bit of Baylard Bear in all of us." - Dr. Lawrence Coates, PhD Lancaster, California

"From your first encounter with Baylard Bear through the last page, he continues to show that though we are all different, we all have that most important of needs - to love and be loved for who we are." - Ted Krapf,  Former Program Director, Foundation for the Retarded of the Desert

"You are on the right track with Baylard Bear. As an adoptive father and in dealing with a hundred adoptive cases, we need good material to discuss adoption with our children." - David L. Ellis,  Adoption Attorney

"The Adventures of Baylard Bear is a wonderful story that will help children understand that everyone is a little different and that we should embrace diversity! What an awesome lesson!" - Trisha Miller, Chief Professional Officer, Southern Sierra Boys & Girls Club

From the Author

This charming tale recounts the story of a baby bear named Baylard who is left on the steps of a human orphanage by his bear parents. Now if he has any hope of being adopted by a loving human family, he must learn to do all the things the other children can do. Of course, since Baylard isn't human, this isn't going to be easy.

A long time Eastern Sierra resident, Crosby describes the story as one that will resonate with anyone who has ever felt left out of a group. "Who doesn't remember messing up a book report in front of the whole class or being the new kid on the block?" Crosby said. "That feeling of apart-ness is universal and abides with us no matter how powerful or successful a person ends up."

The author says her intention was to provide an enjoyable experience but one that could also provide an opening for an important conversation between children and their caregivers.

"I believe we're all created unique on purpose - to share our divergent viewpoints, experiences, beliefs and skills. I hope this book will be a kind of roadmap to better understanding and empathy ... on both sides of any relationship," Crosby explained.

Developing the image of Baylard Bear was the most fun part of the effort, according to Crosby. "I worked with an illustrator, Linda Moehlenkamp, for almost a year getting the form and facial expression to round out Baylard's literary presence. She did a great job making the bear huggably attractive and relatable."

Child care/advocate experts agree that Baylard Bear is a "heart warming tale"; "an awesome lesson"; and "a perfect story for children (or bears) who have been adopted themselves."

Lucinda Sue Crosby delivers a heartfelt story that not only brings joy to the reader, but one that refers to a very important topic for children and adults as this book educates on issues that need to be confronted in today's world in order to live a happy, healthy life. After devoting 30 years in healthcare, working for a foster care agency and raising a Special child myself, I found extreme pleasure on the crucial impact this book will make to children, teachers and parents. Baylard Bear was just a few weeks ago, when his parents left him on the steps of a human orphanage. From the time he was able to understand where and why he is where he is, there were many challenges he had to face in order to adjust. He had to deal with being different, being Special, bullying, and more. Most important, he had to be loved and to be able to love others. This book tugs at the heartstrings as it educates page-after-page. Baylard is charming and adorable, the children will love him. The story is a lesson learned that helps understand adoption, and the steps of how to go out into the world as a happy, loving, and caring person. "THE ADVENTURES OF BAYLARD BEAR" is delightful and Enjoyable throughout. In addition, the lesson taught is a valuable, priceless gift in itself. Highly Recommended!

This is a happy story about a little bear who is different but gets adopted by a Mommy who loves him. Even though he is different Baylard is very special and that is something he struggles to learn and understand. You will love Baylard because he is very loving and caring.

Children can really learn something from him. I found Baylard to be very relatable and not just because I am an adoptee myself. I know the struggles of finding that understanding that you are indeed "special" and the understanding that your adoptive parent really does love and accept you and that is not just going to go away one day.

As Baylard knows too well nothing feels permanent when you're an adoptee. I loved how easy Baylard was to relate to not just as an adoptee but as a "person." We all have felt like Baylard at one time when little things make us stand out enough to feel different. But Baylard learns a lot throughout this story and he finds happiness and love in his new family. Three cheers for Baylard!

"The Adventures of Baylard Bear" is a unique book with a main character that children will find endearing. Although there are a couple of messages in this book that I could see being controversial, (mommy bear being to poor to keep her child and blames the humans for destroying the food source and yet drops the bear cub off for the humans to care for) what I kept in mind while reading this book was what the reading experience would be like for a child. As adults, I think we sometimes seek out problems in the books we read where there aren't any that really matter. There are a few punctuation and minor formatting and grammar issues with this book, but I felt the writing itself outweighed most of the negatives.

I liked this book for two main reasons. The first, is that this book is written with children in mind. Instead of just writing a book and hoping it's okay enough for a child to read, you can tell by the way this book was planned out that the author truly cares about delivering her message to a younger audience. I thought it was a good message for a younger child or even an older child to understand that it is okay to be different. What makes us all individual is exactly what this book is centered around. Just because we are different does not mean we are not the same in the ways that matter.

Secondly, I liked this book because the author took the time to make her main character someone that a child could get to know through the chapters and learn to care about. The beginning of this book is a little sadder than I expected for a children's title, but it did make me care what happened to the bear, hoping he would get a good home and all of his problems would be solved.

The Adventures of Baylard Bear is a book that I will be using with third graders to achieve their adoptions of Beanie Babies along with reading and writing activities. This is a project that I've been doing for a number of years, but this is the first time that I have a book that relates to so many concepts related to adoption, feeling different, unconditional love, acceptance, etc. Even though one reader felt this book did an injustice to some topics, I would say that The Adventures of Baylard Bear opens many doors for discussion. After all, it is up to the adults sharing these stories to create the right impressions for the concepts shared with their children. Baylard gives us the opportunities to deal with issues that otherwise might be too complicated. I do wish that the book could have had more detailed and brighter illustrations. The ones in the book could be used as a coloring book, I guess. But in sharing this with a group, I would have children drawing their own illustrations as I read it because the pictures won't hold their attention...but the story sure will. This book was given to me for writing a review. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
