Meet Bert.
Say hallo to Bert.

Bert is a friendly chap who has many strange and exciting adventures. For instance, one morning as he struggles to put on a shirt, Bert falls down the stairs, out the door, and into the back of a truck, which takes him on an unplanned journey to Scotland.

Another time, Bert is chased down the street by a giant sausage.

Not to worry! Plucky, enthusiastic Bert always rises to the occasion, in this high-spirited collaboration between an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator, who are working together for the first time.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Ahlberg (The Jolly Postman) and Briggs (The Snowman) create a dialogue of words and images in these tales of a clumsy Englishman or, rather, an overgrown English boy. In Chapter One, Bert wakes up: "Meet Bert. This is him. Say hallo to Bert." The character extends a voice-bubble "Hallo!" His beaming smile, button eyes and round head suggest Briggs's Snowman reborn as a rugby player. Next, the text addresses a diminutive, dowdy Mrs. Bert and Baby Bert, who is "fast asleep. Shh! Turn the page... quietly." Inevitably, flipping the page awakens the baby, who explodes into red-faced howling. Bert himself is an infantile fellow, with an awkward body, endearing curiosity and holes in his droopy knit socks. When he tries to dress himself, he tumbles out the door ("He ends up in Scotland"); when he meets a giant sausage, he panics, unaware that it's a costumed vendor. Ahlberg's artful narrative comments on and chats with the slapsticky, colored-pencil images. Briggs's visual sequences communicate the hero's actions eloquently and add atmospheric touches (e.g., a striped tail protrudes from a margin, but readers never see the whole cat), and he alters the pacing by moving fluidly from spreads to comic strip-style panels. Both author and illustrator invite audience conversation with their amiable hero. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

reS-In five brief chapters, Ahlberg and Briggs chronicle the adventures of Bert, a large, affable, and simple fellow. The beginning and end chapters show Bert peacefully at home with wife and baby. The middle three all begin with an ordinary circumstance that quickly becomes frenetic and bizarre. Bert's struggles to put on a shirt somehow land him in Scotland. A stroll down a street finds him being chased by a giant sausage. A walk by a river features Bert both in need of being rescued and then as heroic rescuer. Ahlberg's words are almost superfluous as Briggs's endearing illustrations clearly and comically delineate the action. The humor is quirky and has a decidedly British flair, but the book could prompt some giggles when shared one-on-one with the younger set.

4.0 out of 5 stars One book I don't hate to read over and over, April 3, 2002
This review is from: The Adventures of Bert (Hardcover)
I was surprised that this book had so few words in it - maybe that's what makes it so popular with my 3 year old and 20 month old! (Me, too!) The pictures are lively, Bert is built like a sausage with legs and red hair, and is as unthreatening and jolly a protagonist I've seen in children's books. The kids love having to say "Hallo" , then "Good night" to Bert and Mrs. Bert - and the beginning and end, when they are instructed to turn thepage very, very quietly, so as not to wake baby Bert - then find baby Bert yelling "Waaaaaa" on the next page - "Now look what you've done!" - hysterical every time. They start snorting and chuckling before I've even turned the page. This book is a surprise favorite. I'm very glad I bought it as I was disappointed at first it was so short - it's silly, happy, and delightful and I would advise anyone who has a 1 - 4 year old to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine collaboration!, November 5, 2001
By
This review is from: The Adventures of Bert (Hardcover)
This is the first collaboration for these two author/illustrators, and a fine one it is. Bert is a solid, silly fellow, who along with his wife, likes to drink his tea in bed. Five short segments introduce the reader to Bert, his wife and baby, and show him in some silly adventures, such as winding up in Scotland, because he couldn't get his shirt over his big head properly, running away from a giant sausage (a costumed vendor), and rescuing a puppy from drowning. The funniest bits are at the beginning and end, when the reader is instructed to turn the page very carefully so as not to disturb the baby, but of course that is impossible! Easy to read large print and very short "chapters" will make this a fun book for beginning readers, and the bright, humorous illustrations will make it a fun read-aloud for preschool or kindergarten storytime.
