This book brings together traditional book binding techniques and mixed media to create fun projects. The getting started section is quite brief giving parts of a book, materials needed, sewing signatures and ideas on designing in just nine pages. Each projects gives materials needed, techniques and instructions that are easy to follow. More binding details are given for each project. This book contains a variety of covers incorporating different mixed media techniques such as needle felting, jewellery, weaving, sewing, collage, polymer clay, quilting, decoupage, lino printing and crochet. At the end of each project there is a gallery of ideas and notes from the maker. This book should inspire anyone interested in hand crafting books. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Adventures in Book Binding was the perfect book to get me rolling. It had just enough information to educate me on the basics, but it didn't feel like a book meant for fourth-graders. I had no experience in book binding whatsoever (though I have years of craft experience), and now I feel like I'm ready to take off.
The beginning has information about tools, materials, adhesive, paper, and lots of other information. Each project has the fully explained version, a "Shortcut" idea and blurb for a more simple project, and a "Master" idea and blurb. The instructions themselves have many photographs, illustrations, and easy to read explanations. The projects themselves are astounding! I loved every single one of them. They looked fun to make, they were all very different, and were very inspiring. I could spend hours flipping through this book, and every time I look at a project my mind goes crazy coming up with new ideas of my own. There are templates and patterns in the back. All in all I am highly satisfied with Adventures in Bookbinding and recommend it to anyone who has some experience in sewing or crafting and wants to get started creating their own books or journals.

As with many other titles published by Quarry, "Adventures in Bookbinding-Hand Crafting Mixed-Media Books" by Jeanine Stein, is elegant in its simplicity of information and its layout. There is great attention paid to readability with the use of clean fonts, logical instructions and appropriate illustrations and photos. I was relieved to see the information presented without the designers resorting to color-tinted pages or flowery graphics as seems to be a recent trend in mixed-media books.
The author clearly loves both books and a wide variety of crafts. The m/m part comes from all the various mediums applied to making the covers to enclose your hand made book. There is a slight lean toward textile arts, as the author includes crochet, quilting, weaving, needle-felting, plush dolls and either raw or gessoed canvas for covers on half of the ten projects. Each of these ten ideas then has three variations, with detailed instructions for duplication or further inspiration. These are basic book structures, with front and back covers and simple stitches to join the signatures and then attach the pages to your unique cover. Only the Jewelry & Metal Pocket Sketchbook is slighty varied with accordion folded pages that have pockets. My four star rating comes from a slight niggle I have with the title, which I think could have been more clear. Certainly this book is about much more, and a little less, than "bookbinding". Perhaps the sub-title, Handcrafting Mixed-Media Books would suffice.

I pre-ordered Jeannine's book and then waited impatiently for it to arrive. When it finally did, I savored every page like I was having a delicious meal. What a smorgasbord for us mixed-media junkies curious about incorporating a variety of crafts into our bookmaking. From novices to advanced bookmakers, "Adventures in Bookbinding" is just that... a wonderful adventure.

I originally took this book out of the local library. I loved it so much I bought it! SO much inspiration and great binding ideas throughout the book. Not your run of the mill book on book binding. Lots of tips and easy to follow directions for different techniques. Not a how-to finished project book - more of a technique how-to book. Beautiful photography with lots of closeups and well written.

This is a great book for ideas to make books on your own. I find that it is concise and delivers what I was looking for a good way to make books for my grandchildren that are unique and interesting to each of them. I want to get them interested in writing their own Journals and have planned, with the help of the book great ways to get and keep them interested! A very good buy as well. I had found it for much more money and Amazon saved me quite a bit, not to mention shiping was fast and on time. Way to go Amazon!!
