About the Artist
BREAD & BUTTER: Andrew Sherman "Bread" was born in Eugene, Oregon on November 16, 1967. Craig Glanville "Butter" was born in New York City on March 13, 1969.
Butter started playing violin at the age of 3 and at the age of 11 began playing drums. Butter attended the Harlem School of the Arts and then went on to Berklee College of Music in 1987. While at Berklee he studied with Charlie Persip and performed with Andre Ward and Renaissance. He cites his late uncle Dizzy Gillespie, his father a self-taught bassist, Joe Jones, The Jackson Five, and The Silvers as musicial influences.
Bread began playing piano at the age of 5. He attended High School in Oregon and played in the choir and jazz band. He has been influenced by Miles Mays, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Donny Hathaway, and Pat Metheny, and his parents who were involved in local theatre. After graduating from high school he came East to attend Berklee College of Music in 1986.
Craig and Andrew met in 1987 on a local gig. In 1990 Bread & Butter formed a company where their creative forces would be joined in producing and song writing. Bread & Butter started working with Lalah Hathaway, Walter Beasley and Najee. Bread toured with Freddie Jackson, Najee and Melissa Morgan in 1991. Bread went on to tour with Brian McNight, Jonathan Butler, Phyllis Hyman, and Mikki Howard.
In 1994 Bread & Butter produced Rohn Lawrence's debut album Hangin' On A String (Atlantic Jazz) and "See Ya around". They also have compositions on Walter Beasley's album Intimacy (Mercury), Najee's latest album Share My World (EMI), Lalah Hathaway's last recording A Moment (Virgin), and The Rebirth of Cool 4 (Island/UK), and tracks on Brandy's albums to name a few.
