Even being 'whatshisname' ... I'm not biased,

This review is from: Adventures With My Father: Childhood Recollections of Divorce, Dysfunction and the Summer of Love (Paperback)
Admittedly a gifted storyteller already, this recollection is brilliantly well written; the pictures that are painted make you feel as if you're seeing the world through Skip's eyes. It's as if yours were the pudgey little toes that were peeking up at you from the warm sand in 1965 and the one who soberingly stared mortality in the eye 40 years later in 2005.
Histarically funny at times, and at others make your eyes well up from the emotion pouring off the page; what little boy didn't think his mother was the most beautiful woman on eart at one point, anyway? Pick it up, read it you will not be disappointed. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you're shudder from that uneasy feeling you get when you hear a story that you think can't be real but yet someone went through it (just be happy it wasn't you!) and lived to tell about it. But most of all, you will simply enjoy the journey. Even hard core, reading "refusers" said they had a difficult time putting this down.

Couldn't put it down!,
This review is from: Adventures With My Father: Childhood Recollections of Divorce, Dysfunction and the Summer of Love (Paperback)
I read this book in 3 days because it was so hard to put down! I loooove a book that I can't wait to get back to and Adventures With My Father is one of them. I could absolutely relate to being the victim of a rotten older brother's antics and... I'm not sure but I think my brother had that same Lost in Space shirt!
This story is told with a great sense of humor and draws you in from the first page. It's kind of like The Wonder Years but funnier and crazier. It's a great read and you won't be disappointed. - Lauri Quinn Loewenberg, author of Dream on It: Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life

I enjoyed reading this story, but was distracted by the poor editing. There were a few typos and some of the stories need editing. I also found myself wanting to know more information about his Mom and especially the story about how his older brothers came to be a part of the family.
If you like Jeanette Walls "Glass Castle", you will most likely enjoy this.

Absolute must read! You won't be able to put the book down!!!,
This review is from: Adventures With My Father: Childhood Recollections of Divorce, Dysfunction and the Summer of Love (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have read! Skip is an amazing story teller...I started reading this book, and could not for the life of me put it down!! By night 1 of owning this book...I had it half read (I probably would have read the whole thing if I didnt have to get up 4 hours later....) you will find yourself traveling alongside skip during his "adventures". You will laugh, you will cry, and you will want so badly to hug the little boy (and at times, smack some sense into his father)....This book is very inspiring...whether you had a leave it to beaver childhood....or feel like your childhood was so insane it could only have happend to you. Do yourself a favor, buy this book and get your friend a copy too! You will NOT be disappointed!!!!!

I love to read and want a book to "grab" me early on. This one did, held my attention all the way to the end. I laughed and cried and could not put it down. Read it! Can't believe it is writer's first book.

A great read.,

This was one of those books that immediately grabs you and makes it hard to put down. I found this to be like Marley and Me, in that it had me laughing out loud at times. A gifted storyteller and now author, Skip paints the pictures and makes you feel as if you were there with him. A definite must read.

A wonderful book that will keep your interest from start to finish no matter what your interests are. It will take you to places where you have been, those places 'inside'..those 'special' places you share with only a chosen few. It will 'remind' you of your life, even tho 'your life' was nothing in comparison. You will learn things you werent really expecting to learn. And thru it all, even tho your eyes may 'water' at times.....you smile.....Then you want to demand a second installment.

I finished "Adventures with my Father" in practically one sitting. What an amazing story. Mahaffey does such a wonderful job of describing the situations he and his brother were forced to deal with at such an early age. I felt like I was right there as part of the story sometime laughing out loud, crying to myself or just wondering about the ghosts of my own childhood.
