As they discovered on previous trips, the only way to return to the present is to read the guidebook they were given. The tale is presented on two parallel tracks: the first, a cartoon narrative about the kids' adventures; the second, the pages of a yellowed guidebook, which notes facts about Ice Age people, animals, tools, social life, hunting, music, language, and more. Readers will enjoy Bailey's breezy style, which remains light even as it delivers information; there's even occasional humor. Slavin's colorful illustrations clarify the details and add to the appeal. An afterward distinguishing fact from fiction rounds out a good introduction for young readers. Kay Weisman

This is a great book for young kids, 7-10, who don't like to sit down with an encyclopedia (and most don't)and yet are facinated with the happenings of mammoths.... This book is in cartoon form and is humorus, fun for kids, yet it sneeks in enough of the facts for the kids to actually learn a fair amount about this time period.
