Great Reference!,
By Mary (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventures in Japanese (Level 1) Workbook (Level 1) (Japanese Edition) (Paperback)
As a new Japanese student, I found this book to be extremely helpful. Not only are the hiragana and katakana alphabets included and explained, but there is also a lot of cultural information that I found very interesting. This book is very easy to understand and is even good for some basic teach-yourself Japanese, which is what I'm doing. In the first half of the book, all the words are spelled out in Romanji, so it makes it so much easier for beginners to learn how to read and pronounce Japanese words. You will not be dissapointed!

The ABSOLUTE best book for beginners,
This review is from: Adventures In Japanese Level 1, (TEACHER'S HANDBOOK) (Paperback)
As a college student majoring in Japanese Language and Literature and going to continue on to a master's degree, I have come across many books claiming to teach a person the Japanese language. This book series, however, does the best to provide grammatical explanation and basic grammar. If you are trying to learn Japanese on your own, I would recommend this book to start with. Not only will it be useful in terms of making your way through Japan, but it is interesting and does more than teach the language. It also provides culture notes which are important since language is more than grammatical structure and words, its context.

Something Is Missing!,

This review is from: Adventures in Japanese Hiragana-Katakana Workbook (Level 1) (Paperback)
This workbook has the best format of any workbook I've seen. It drives on practice...practice...practice. This would easily be a 5-Star workbook and maybe the absolute best if the answers to the questions were somewhere in the book. As a workbook for beginners, I believe the answers should exist so a self learner could check his/her work so they don't develop bad habits from the start. 2 Stars might seem harsh, but for the price of this workbook I expected something complete.

Excellent for beginners in Japanese!,
This review is from: Adventures In Japanese: Level 1 (Japanese Edition) (Paperback)
This is an excellent textbook for those beginning to learn Japanese. Everything is very clear and easy to understand. This volume teaches you both Hiragana and Katakana as well as a few basic Kanji. I recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning Japanese.

its fun enough,

This review is from: Adventures in Japanese 1 Textbook (Paperback)
well i first got this book when i was in high school.. i found it to be entertaining and the pictures helped to cement the vocab.. however this book has WAY too many classroom vocabulary.. plus some of the activities are for groups..
so its tough for a home learner unless you have someone else doing it with you.. one of the nice things is that it starts out with romaji then works its way until all pronunciation guides are in kana and then it introduces some basic kanji by the end.. all and all not bad

I am a Japanese native and tutoring and teaching Japanese language privately last 5 years. I recently purchased this textbook and workbook for one of my students who want to prepare for AP Japanese test in the future. This book is for classroom use which requires "a instructor". Not self-learning material. Explanation of grammar is very clear to English speaking students. Cultural information is accurate and enticing.
Many group activities for classroom use are included in the textbook. I prefer using "Minna no Nihongo" for those who want to learn practical dialogue base Japanese ( in business level). For intermediate level students who tend to struggle to advance, I recommend Doraemon no Dokodemo Nihongo.

Funny and useful book for learning Nihongo,
This review is from: Adventures in Japanese 1 Textbook (Paperback)
We used this textbook series in our high school Japanese class. They were an excellent resource in our classroom. The vocabulary and grammar lessons were easy to follow, and the illustrations were pretty funny. It's been a few years, and now my Japanese skills have been wearing away, but if you continue this series and study hard, you will be very good at Japanese. And I would agree with the reviewers who said that you can use this to teach yourself Japanese...provided that you are motivated to learn the language and have a friend you can talk to and write to for practice.

My daughter used this for her high school Japanese class. We purchased it so she can keep up with her Japanese, and I'm now learning as well. It looks like a great textbook and I'll be using it soon.
