Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This personal account of many journeys and a life in transition is well served by the author's own reading. Turk's voice conveys the same honesty as his prose, as if inviting the listener for a casual evening of stories around the fire. The reading is not always smooth and polished, but this occasional unsteadiness evokes the essence of the uncertainties and struggles that Turk has confronted and made central to his book. The abridged reading retains the spirit of adventure and self-discovery that propelled Turk to explore Cape Horn, the Northwest Passage, Baffin Island, and Greenland. Listeners may well set off to follow his paddle strokes. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Byron Ricks

From Library Journal

An educated man who writes textbooks for a living, Turk struggles with an inner need to go on self-directed expeditions to barren, frozen wilderness, often risking his life in the pursuit of his various goals. The twice-divorced father of three lives a very transient, uncertain lifestyle and is not particularly likable. Calling his ventures a trip to self-discovery, he seems confused, self-centered, and a general misfit. While Turk's stories about his dog-sledding and kayaking will interest some outdoor enthusiasts, they seem more like impersonal observations than heartfelt reactions to a dog freezing to death, seal bodies stacked like cord wood, or his unreliable male partner. What he's doing at various times isn't particularly easy to follow as he hops from one venture to another. His enunciation and inflection are just adequate; in addition, there's a nasal, whiny quality to his voice. Listening to him is not particularly worthwhile or enjoyable. Only libraries desperate for tapes on these topics should consider.ACarolyn Alexander, Brigadoon Lib., Salinas, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars an AMAZING JOUNEY!, October 19, 1998

This review is from: Adventures in a Kayak, Rowboat and Dogsled (Audio Cassette)
Jon Turk made me feel as though I were on the jouney with him. He takes you through dangerous waters while taking you back through history. I liked the way he intertwined family making him seem all the more real to life. I have never been one to take too many risks in life so I admire this man. He makes you want to go back in time to experience the reality of life. I wish he would write his experience of the actual success of rounding the horn. I also expected him to make a comment toward putting his feet on the table and toasting the queen.
