I read this book around 1972 and now my sons have a chance to read it. More about Lewis and Clark than they'll pick up in 13 years of public education.

After my eight year old son, who had just completed 2nd grade, didn't know much about why we celebrated the Fourth of July or the Founding Fathers, I recalled these books, which I had while growing up. Some of them are still in print (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson), but some are out of print, like this one, so you'll have to buy it used. This book is quite a bit longer than the other books in the series, but it's still written in a style that an 8 year old can understand and follow. It has some pictures throughout the book and it has a nice map on the inside back cover. Unlike the ones still in print, the older books are hardback and they have better pictures.

I think these books are great to provide an introduction to important figures in American history. Note that since this book was written forty years ago, it does use the term "Negro" to describe one of the people in the William and Clark expedition.

I'd recommend to buy, either to read to your child at night or to have them read these books. Infinitely better than Junie B. Jones.
