Book Description

Adventures in Management is an insider's view of corporate management in developing countries. Highlighting the key differences between the developing and developed countries in terms of issues of politics, corruption, and cultural attitudes, the author explains how to perform successfully despite them. The basic premise of this book is that since it is managers who make the corporation, it is essential to equip them not only with managerial techniques but also with the knowledge of the particular environment within which they function. The author explains how managers should deal with the challenges of managing in a developing environment so as to perform successfully. Core lessons in the book include how to develop a harmonious culture within any business and create an environment that works to the advantage of the business and the benefit and dignity of the employees. Based on the author's personal experiences while working in both a large, state-owned corporation and a multinational company in Sri Lanka, this book comprehensively highlights the ground realities of managing in developing countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventures in Management, January 25, 2007
This review is from: Adventures in Management (Response Books) (Paperback)
Adventures in Management makes easy reading for a book associated with management but it also carries an important message. Its anecdotal style of revealing management issues would even make it an interesting novel. It offers the reality of the problems facing the aggressive manager in developing countries, which alone should make it additional reading for students of international management in the era of global business. But the message of the book seems to be that despite problems, and I wouldn't ascribe all of these situations only to developing countries, the goal of business profitability and growth can yet be achieved by enterprising managers by innovative strategies without compromising morality and integrity. As a practicing manager, I found this book fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventures in Management, January 25, 2007
This review is from: Adventures in Management (Response Books) (Paperback)
This is an excellent book, based on extensive wide ranging first hand successful management experience. One outstanding example of the author's management expertise was his dramatic turn around of a nearly moribund parastatal. I have personal knowledge of the situation and know that he left a successful marketing career and a high paying job with world renowned Levers to see if he could transform a loss making but important state enterprise into a well managed and profitable business. He did so in several years with spectacular results. His success is now documented in a Harvard Business School case study which is now used in the teaching curriculm of the Harvard Business School. Many other examples of good management practice in the developing world are detailed in the book. What sets this book apart from many, especially those by Western authors, is the keen eyed understanding of good management practice in the different and often confusing culture and context of the developing world. I commend the book for its practical relevance and hope the author will share the details of the work he has done in various countries as a management consultant for the World Bank and United Nations.
