5.0 out of 5 stars The most fun you will ever have with paper and ink., September 4, 1998
By
This review is from: Adventures (Paperback)
I first picked this up thinking it was an Raiders of the Lost Ark-type of adventure story. What I found was in reality a hilarious parody that plays with just about every adventure story cliche there is. Resnick introduces us to the right reverend Lucifer Jones. In the 1920's, Jones makes his way across Africa. This is a man who has a unique relationship with the almighty. He will pose as a man of the cloth spreading the word. In turn, God will turn a blind eye to Jones' attempt to break every one of the ten commandments. Jones also breakes every law of man and has a ball along the way. Jones meets up with Jungle lords, amazon princesses and egyptian mummies run amok. While Jones is a rouge and blackheart, you cant help bult like the guy. I do not have the descriptive power at my command to convey the sheer fun of reading this book. Read it for yourself and you will beg for more!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great campy send-up of pulp adventure stories, October 4, 2011
This review is from: Adventures (Paperback)
The right reverend Lucifer Jones travels across Africa pulling cons and swindles on everyone in search of a fortune. The problem is that the people he's conning are even bigger scoundrels. Reminiscent of all the campy, overblown adventure stories of the pulp magazines, this book is a rollicking good read.

I've always enjoyed pulp fiction, stories of exotic locations and great adventures. Mike Resnick serves up his version with a huge dollop of spoof. Tarzan, except by a different name, makes his appearance on more than the cover. Except he's a British lord who has inherited a big swath of jungle. He spends his time reorganizing gorilla society and government and protecting the wild. This is just one example of the kind of silliness this book excels in.
