1.0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Boondocks, September 12, 2010
This review is from: Adventures in Nature British Columbia (Paperback)
Based on our experience, do not trust this author's research!

The village of Bamfield, according to Ms. Quan, is located "at the end of Highway 18" out of Duncan. In truth, it is about 110 K of mazelike, poorly marked, graveled, pot-holed private logging roads past the end of Highway 18. Note: if driving a rental car, the insurance will not cover you on these roads. By a miracle, we found our way there, but got lost on the way back -- drove 20 K out of our way before a bulldozer driver kindly directed us to turn almost all the way back to start again. The book promises that Bamfield hosts "numerous restaurants, services, accommodations, and shops.... luxury in the back of beyond." Accommodations, yes, but only one restaurant -- not open on Wednesdays, and closed at 6 pm; the one pub thankfully served food, but most of the menu had been crossed out, leaving virtually nothing but hamburgers; a convenience store (closed at 7 pm), a marine supplies store; a general store and post office are accessible only by water taxi. Canoe and kayak rentals and boat charters are available. No other shops or services -- a gas station is a couple of miles out on a first nations reserve.

We were quite annoyed to have wasted 8 hours of our precious limited vacation time fighting our way over those roads based on the author's description.
