This is an interesting little book written by one of the most important missionaries to what was at the time called "The Last Unknown". In an age when the vast empty spaces of African maps were being filled in by western explorers, the huge island of New Guinea remained largely unexplored. Life there was not easy. If jungle diseases, deadly crocs and massive storms didn't get you, enthusiastic headhunting, cannibalism and perpetual tribal warfare could. In this book Chalmers tells about some of his missionary and travelling endeavours from about 1875-1885. It is worth noting that Chalmers--who knew RL Stevenson, interestingly enough--was himself killed and eaten by headhunters in 1901. Gives the whole book a rather creepy vibe...
His writing is good, though not great. This edition in the Forgotten Classics series is of very basic quality (one part of a page is not reproduced, for example), but for $9.00 you might give this a look. Some of his stories are memorable!

This was a pretty boring book. A much better book on New Guinea is "Lost in Shangri-La" It is the true story of survivors of a plane wreck during World War II in New Guinea. Their experience was away from the war action, but they had plenty of action with the jungle and the natives.
