A Sinister Aura, the first in a perspective series of stories featuring Polly and Handgraves, is a solid read.
A mystery set in more sensible times, the young sleuth-writer Polly (who may as well be borderline psychic) and her able manservant Handgraves make a mid-journey stop and stumble across a dastardly murder. Compelled by curiosity to find answers, the plot thickens to encompass a New England taste of the American Gothic family ethos.
Charmingly affluent, the story is well constructed and the dialogue is worthy of a stage. The art is a black and white triumph, with ghostly grey tones and imagery that does more than merely tell the tale- it bleeds with the moodiness of secrets, of murder most foul.
If you like a good detective story, this is your cup of nightmare.

A sinister Aura by Bret Herholz is fun and devious. Disturbing and delightful. THe clever quips and the delicious interaction between Polly and Handgraves is to die for. Not literally of course. Buy it. Love it.
