5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Charming, June 28, 2006
By
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
This is an incredibly enjoyable book that both you and your child(ren) will love. The age range says 4-8, but my three year old was an instant fan after one "read". Since there are no words and only many clever and charming illustrations, kids can easily follow along. Not only that, both the reader and the "readee" can add their own details to the unfolding story, only enhancing its appeal. I can't wait to get my hands on more Polo books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative, Innovative, Imaginative book!, February 28, 2007
By
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
We LOVE this book, and his new one too. Each time we can change the story however we choose. It's so fun to let our 2 year old participate with her ideas! Our 4 year old loves to play pretend with this book. It's the perfect book for when we're all a little too tired to read.

The illustrations are beautifully done with a playful bent. This little dog has the best adventures!! Driving clouds, becoming friends with an imprisoned snowman (who he helps escape), and learning that friendship is the most important thing of all.

A++ from this family!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Polo, August 29, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
This book is amazing. I am well over the suggested age to read this book, yet Polo still managed to take me from my reading chair into an amazing world where all things are possible. I highly recommend this book for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful read, August 17, 2011
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
My daughter loves this book (and her other Polo books), every time I ask her what she wants to read she tells me Polo. This one is my favorite Polo book because it is just the right size of a single sitting and is exciting so she does not get bored. Also, it is easy to narrate as a story and works in just about every language which is great if you are trying to raise a bilingual child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful imaginative book, June 16, 2011
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
My boys (5 and 3) both love this wordless book. It's almost like a graphic novel with no words. It's quite long, which they love. My 5 year old looks at it alone in bed after we have left, almost every night. He says it helps him fall asleep. He follows Polo through every square and notices every detail. I ordered Polo and the Dragon, which is also wonderful but much, much shorter. I wish there were another one this length. This is one of the largest children's books we have, and one that is looked at almost every day. Highly recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative, whimsical, delightful!, April 12, 2011
By
This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
Polo is an adorable, patch-eyed dog who leads a rich, imaginative life. He lives in a large tree on a small island in the sea. Said island has a line staked to it leading ... onto the next page. Polo gathers his surprisingly well-stocked-for-its-size backpack, grabs his umbrella, and exits the island by tight-rope walking on the line. The line, conveniently enough, turns into stairs, which then lead to a slide. Polo slides down onto a fluffy cloud and has his breakfast of cloud soup (the bowl being the first of many items to emerge from his backpack) before visiting his friend who is fishing from the cloud he lives on. Polo then slides down the fishing line to land on his own boat before setting off on an underwater adventure.

So begins this utterly impossible - yet entirely convincing - wordless adventure book. Each page bends the mind a bit further as Polo travels through visual tricks and treats from one adventure to another, ranging from whales to icebergs to the moon, only to end up back on his tree-island with all the friends he's met along the way.

The book is illustrated with bold, brightly colored cartoon-like illustrations that vividly bring each unlikely scene to believable life. Children will be drawn to the colors and the whimsy of the book. Also, because it is entirely wordless, this is the first book that my four and a half year old can "read" by herself. She likes to read it by flashlight curled up under her covers before falling asleep at night.

This book is charming and delightful for both children and their parents. We will be adding more Polo books to our collection soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations to spur your imagination, November 16, 2010

This book does not contain any words. Instead it is drawn similar to a cartoon. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book is a bit larger than a standard hard cover and is pretty long. When you open the book it is filled with beautiful, bright, bold illustrations of the adventures of Polo. A great book to spur on the creativity of a child as they make up what is happening in the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars playful, inventive, wordless graphic novel, December 12, 2009
By

This review is from: The Adventures of Polo (Hardcover)
My children, ages 3 and 6, are both smitten with Polo, and like to read it to each other. In this playful, inventive, wordless graphic novel, Polo the dog gamely takes whatever opportunities come his way. Ladders appear and up he climbs; poles appear and down he slides; and thus does he travel the universe. The plot is surprisingly intricate, and I was tickled by how much vocabulary my little one acquired from a wordless book (e.g. scuba mask, asteroid, iceberg, and pelican). My older child is a fluent reader who usually chooses chapter books, so I was thrilled that this book got her looking closely at artwork. I'm even considering sharing the book with my 5th grade Language Arts students -- it would be a fun tool for teaching either sequencing or inference. But I would hate to ever say, "Read this book because it promotes literacy skills." Instead, I want to say, "Read this book because it's clever and fun!"

I started reading, well, telling this book to my daughter when she was 3. Now she's 5, and she still loves Polo. But now, she's reading the book to me. It's still fun each time, because we vary the story, depending on our mood and ideas. Would absolutely recommend!
