4.0 out of 5 stars The Fun of Story Telling and Mischief!, May 1, 2010
My daughter loves this book when I read it to her at bedtime; it has many types of colorful animal characters that children generally find amusing.

There is a new neighbor in the Green Forest, Prickly Porky the Porcupine. His reoccurring mischievous prank takes center stage in this book. His friends, Peter Rabbit, Unc' Billy Possum and Jimmy Skunk are involved in his antics too.

One day Peter Rabbit happens to see a strange thing which scares him quite a deal, he unknowingly tells the rest of the forest of the thing he saw, and this begins a long series of events that ends up humiliating some of the most hated residents of the forest. For Peter eventually learns the truth of what scared him so, and together with his friends they start scaring known predators such as Reddy Fox, Granny Fox and Ole Man Coyote. What is scaring them? - Why it is none other than Prickly Porky in disguise.

Fans of Burgess' classic series of children's books will no doubt love this edition in his series. It teaches the same naturalistic morals involving Mother Nature that he is famous for. I hope you give the book a try.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining and fun story for everyone, December 13, 2008
Originally published in 1916, this story by Thornton W. Burgess is an example of old-fashioned storytelling that teaches good, solid morals and values. It is simply fun to read about the residents of the Green Forest, their lives and their interaction with their newest neighbor, Prickly Porky the Porcupine. In this particular adventure, there is a new creature that is frightening the forest's inhabitants. Prickly Porky hasn't seen it and one by one, his neigbors begin to investigate the strange sighting of the creature that appears at the bottom of Prickly's hill. This is the kind of story that is ideal to read to kids over a few nights in bed or over hot chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original Harrison Cady Illustrations, September 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is for the edition published by Dover. Unfortunately, all reviews appear under all editions, regardless of publisher.

This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.

Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title:
-- Published by Little, Brown, with 6 full-page grayscale illustrations.
-- Published by Grosset & Dunlap, with 14 full-page line drawings, including line-drawing versions of all 6 original grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown editions, plus many smaller line drawings.

This Dover edition has a weird hybrid: it has the 6 B&W drawings from the Grosset & Dunlap edition that were redrawings of the 6 grayscale illustrations in the Little, Brown edition.

If you're going to print the Grosset & Dunlap illustrations, why not print all 14 of them??? Weird. But the important thing is that they are real Cady drawings.

Anyway, kudos to Dover on getting basically it right for this title. And at such a low price!

If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Grosset & Dunlap edition too, to get the other 8 drawings. A good place to look is AbeBooks dot com.
