Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Adventures of a Psychic might not be the next Indiana Jones sequel, but the "adventures" in the title is appropriate, since Sylvia Browne never stops amazing us with her channeling, psychic visions, healing, and even ghost stories. Coauthor Antoinette May's biographical talents are first rate, however her third person point of view tends to distance the reader from Browne's story. May compensates for this minor shortcoming by expertly weaving Browne's psychic talents with her personal life, from childhood to grandmotherhood, and grounding the supernatural parts of Adventures of a Psychic in the same sort of mundane problems we are all prone to run into. While reading this book, you may stare with an open mouth at glimpses of a world beyond death, and at the same time discover that we all possess a limitless potential, even if we are not gifted with psychic ability. --Brian Patterson

1.0 out of 5 stars One star is one too many, July 12, 1999

This review is from: Adventures of a Psychic: A Fascinating and Inspiring True-Life Story of One of America's Most Successful Clairvoyants (Paperback)
I found this book thoroughly disappointing. It was redundant and self-serving - 'check on it.' Also, if her best examples of her psychic powers are described in the book, I have to say, they are not impressive in the least. Sylvia Browne is always telling people to check on her accuracy but her leads are impossible to follow up on and she keeps things general enough to prevent accurate validation. She is rarely consistent in anything she says; for instance she talks about Francine in her book, yet stated on Montel that she does not talk to spirit guides. She also said that everyone 'on the other side' is thirty, yet minutes later she is describing a child spirit who is bothering someone. And what is this 'not knowing you're dead for a year' stuff? Aren't there any helpful spirits over there to inform the deceased that they have passed over? I think it is horrible how Sylvia shocks people with terrible news about loved ones (i.e; they are dead somewhere), then smiles, tells a joke or two and moves on to the next victim. I would like to know if any of these supposedly dead people have ever resurfaced?!? Sylvia mentions her son Chris in her book with great affection but barely mentions her second son, and doesn't have much to say about her mother either. I think the Browne family could use some serious counseling. This book did not make me a Sylvia Browne fan. Instead, it made me discount everything she says from now on. Anyone who pays her 400.00 for a reading is desperate indeed. Sylvia may say she is like an emergency room medic 'patching people up and sending them on their way' but I find her callous and cruel with no concern or compassion for those who seek her help and guidance. People would be well advised to look elsewhere - ANYWHERE else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Adventures of a Psychic , a reincarnation of MyGuide, Myself, August 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Adventures of a Psychic: A Fascinating and Inspiring True-Life Story of One of America's Most Successful Clairvoyants (Paperback)
I was so excited to see Sylvia on Montell Williams show that I rushed out that day to buy "Adventures of a Psychic". The book was soo good that I read it in one night. It was so good to know that there is life after death and I will see my loved ones and not be in fear when that day comes. That same week I wanted more of Sylvia's works so I went to our local library and found "My Guide My Self". Boy was I disappointed. Here I found that this book dated 2/90 was the same EXACT book word for word, page for page, as the book I had just gone and paid $13 dollars for. I felt cheated. I don't know if Sylvia realized that we would find this out but I hope she addresses this and I feel an apology is owed to all who have gone to buy this book and then later to find out its the same EXACT book. Shame on you Sylvia!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, enligtening and powerful, June 14, 2001
This review is from: Adventures of a Psychic: A Fascinating and Inspiring True-Life Story of One of America's Most Successful Clairvoyants (Paperback)
If you've ever wondered what it's like to be precognitive, clairvoyant, clairaudiant, or to experience other psychic abilities, Sylvia Browne's ADVENTURE OF A PSYCHIC is a must read. For those who don't believe in psychic phenomena, this book will make the reader a believer. Written in clear concise tones, with undercurrents of both religious philosophy and pragmatism, Browne's ADVENTURE OF A PSYCHIC tells not only the story of Browne's life, but also gives a basic understanding of our purpose on this planet.

The voice of Francine, Browne's spirit guide, imparts a basic understanding of the purpose of this "learner's planet" and the dimensions beyond. Despite the ability to help others with her gifts, Browne also makes it clear that her gifts don't guide her own actions; her mistakes create her life lessons just like everyone else. In addition, Browne shares her experience in helping with hauntings, missing persons cases and predictions of various tragedies or world events. Throughout the book, Browne emphasizes that all people have psychic abilities, and offers insight to opening to those innate abilities.

Having listened to the abridged, taped version of Sylvia Browne's ADVENTURE OF A PSYCHIC, I assumed I was familiar enough with her story that the book would be a quick skim. While the tape includes inflections and details that might not be in the book that really give the listener a sense of Sylvia Browne the person, the book gives a deeper understanding of her psychic experiences and the lessons she wishes to share. While the text is less personal, less a "conversation", it does contain more detail, to the point that at times the book becomes a teacher. Indeed, both the book and tape must be experienced to fully appreciate all the lessons Browne has to share, as a person and as a professional psychic. Consequently, ADVENTURES OF A PSYCHIC both the book and on tape, as separate experiences, come very highly recommended.

Bright Blessings, Weaver
