I was looking for a comprehensive treatment of the Robin Hood legend that was both highly literate and child-friendly (and for me "child-friendly" normally involves beautiful illustrations). This is it! The story is engagingly-written without being at all "dumbed down", and the illustrations are simply gorgeous. The narrative is also, for the most part, broken up into portions that lend themselves to bedtime reading. Am so happy with this "find"!

This is a delightful version of the classic Robin Hood. I especially love the illustrations by Greg Hildebrandt, and the timelessness of this leather bound edition. We see Robin hood as handsome and brave. The romance between him and Maid Marian is bitter-sweet. The book is divided in chapters, yet can be enjoyed by children and adults alike without being boring. I personally keep it on my bookshelf, away from little hands.

Like many people, I was familiar with the story of Robin Hood, so there weren't exactly any surprises in reading this book. There have been many versions of the story told both in movies, plays and even books. My son was asking questions about the original story, so I tried to find a good classic book for him. After reading other reviews, I decided to try this version. It is written in Old English, so there are phrases and words that have different meanings and can make some sections of the book more challenging to read and understand. I've read Old English stories before, so I was familiar with most of the terms and style of writing, but I can see where it might be a difficult read for people who are less familiar with the terms.

Even though I knew the story, I found myself caught up in the characters and plot. This version does a great job of introducing Robin Hood's men and giving more depth to the characters than a movie. I enjoyed this classic version and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an older and more traditional story line for Robin Hood.

I think it was a great book-a little easier to understand in spots than the very old English of the Howard Pyle version, though that is good too. However, what happened to the end? I got the the last page and it says, "And on the stone were graven these words:" and that is the end of the book! Maybe mine its the only one like that since I don't see anyone else saying something similar...

Thank you for republishing the book I remember from my childhood (back in the Jurassic)! I read it out loud to my sons (12 1/2 and 8 1/2) and they love it!

there isn't a lot things to say about this book. for someone who just wants a quick fill-in on the Robin Hood legend, it's perfectly fine-although I'd personally suggest the Howard Pyle version, in spite of the fact that it lacks any mention of Maid Marian, or the Rosemary Sutcliff version, which is awesome. this version introduces the reader to the basic characters and their popular origin stories, and wraps up nicely with King Richard's return and the pardon of the outlaws. that said, it's blatantly emotionless, doubtlessly plagiaristic, and inarguably unsatisfying. the romance makes no sense, and exists purely because it's supposed to. the motivations of the characters are never revealed. at one point the outlaws overtake Nottingham by force in order to save (interchangeable outlaw) but then go back to hiding in the woods. not a book I'd recommend to anyone.

This is a fairly similar to Howard Pyle's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", but not exactly the same. I still enjoyed reading it , and I really like the slim form factor and beautiful glossy green cover and design. Maybe a silly reason to like a book that honestly merits no credit for it's originality, but there it is. I like to slip this in my bag when I go camping, and read about Robin and his friends adventures when I get some time, and there is nothing wrong with that.
