Perfect!,

This review is from: Adventures of Robin Hood (Hardcover)
I was looking for a comprehensive treatment of the Robin Hood legend that was both highly literate and child-friendly (and for me "child-friendly" normally involves beautiful illustrations). This is it! The story is engagingly-written without being at all "dumbed down", and the illustrations are simply gorgeous. The narrative is also, for the most part, broken up into portions that lend themselves to bedtime reading. Am so happy with this "find"!

We got this book from the library for my Robin Hood obsessed 5 year old girl, so we knew exactly what we were getting. She loved the book, but it's not for everyone. The wording is a bit hard for a young child and I would only recommend this book for older children that are very interested in Robin Hood. We also got the Adventures of Robin Hood by Marcia Williams, and that is fabulous for 5-8 year olds.

Beautiful, a great addition to any collection.,

Granted it is a children's book. I loved it personally and found the artwork outstanding. The story is concise and crisp and to the point. For me it was the artwork that made the Robin Hood story new in this release. I'm thrilled to have it in my collection and look forward to passing it on to my kids.

Illustrations good, but writing very very bad!,

The writing in this book is horrible. Incomplete sentences that no one can understand, children and adults included. The grammar is so poor I am afraid it will instill poor grammar in kids reading the book. The book also uses words that are either too archaic or advanced for children. I have 4 advanced university degrees and if I have to use a dictionary to look up words on every page it is simply too difficult for children.
The story is disjointed and overall very poorly written. There is only one sentence on taking the rich and giving to the poor in the entire book. It misses any opportunity for giving children life lessons and relies substantially on good artwork. The cover and artwork in this large book is very good. I want so badly to give it more than 1 star, especially with the beautiful artwork, but I had such a horrible time reading it the pictures didn't make the overall experience any better. If all you are looking for are illustrations this book is for you. If you also want substance in the written text or at least something children can read or listen to, I recommend passing on this one. |
