Norman Moosewell, volume 8 of the collected Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons, is another fine outing from Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose. Discovered by football scouts, Bullwinkle joins the team at Wossamotta U., where Bullwinkle's throwing arm turns the team into an unbeatable juggernaut. As the odds in their favor rise at bookie joints everywhere, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale decide it's time to cash in by fixing a game so that Wossamatta U. will lose. The story line is not only the usual rapid-fire compilation of cheap jokes and painful puns, it's also an impressively scathing satire of college sports. Interspersed between episodes of this story are Peabody's Improbable History, in which Professor Peabody and his assistant Sherman go back in time to help Shakespeare with the debut of Romeo and Zelda; a Fractured Fairy Tale about the son of Rumplestiltskin; and an exceptional Dudley Do-Right story in which Dudley becomes convinced that Snidely Whiplash is his younger brother--and decides that what Snidely really needs is the love and discipline the villain never got in childhood. With Rocky & Bullwinkle, even the exposition is entertaining. The animation may be slapdash, but the wit is always crisp. --Bret Fetzer

This is the wildest Rocky & Bullwinkle advernture of all, combining lots of action with a premise that remains prescient in the wake of continuing scandals in collegiate athletics.

The University of Wossamatta is running out of money and needs a star player for its football team to draw in spectators. Bullwinkle and Rocky are recruited, and soon their "Alley Oop!" forward passes and Bullwinkle's ability to use his antlers (which are also good for hanging hats on) enable Wossamatta to trounce every team they play.

In step professional gamblers Boris and Natasha. Having spent years breaking things, Boris now will fix - a game. But their first plan winds up only winning Wossamatta another game, so they get the help of Fearless Leader to build their own team, a phalanx of monstrous types known as the Mud City Manglers - and to drive the betting odds even higher they disguise these unspeakable turks as girls!

The funniest parts come as we see bookies all over the country watch in horror as the overwhelmingly favored Wossamatta team is trailing badly to the manglers-in-drag. Eventually, unable to possible pay off Badenov at the odds given, they flee the country - to Pottsylvania.

The only flaw in the tape is that it cuts out some of the funniest lines of the original serial - notably when a Southern type (Paul Frees) browbeats narrator William Conrad for using the title Civil Defense. Nonetheless, you won't watch a football game the same way again after seeing The Bullwinkle Bowl.

I didn't think this would be as popular today as it was when I showed it to a bunch of elementary school kids. They ate it up and loved the show. I'll order more. Thanks.

Bullwinkle is one of the coolest, goofiest cartoon characters ever. I love the old rocky and bullwinkle cartoons. Isn't it true Bobby De Niro owns the rights to Rocky and Bullwinkle now?
