This book is a definite must-buy for all mystery lovers. The stories speak for themselves, but for those who are not familiar with the stories of Sherlock Holmes I assure you that they are worth reading again and again. I have a small baby and although he has kept me very busy I was able to relax when I sat down during his breif naps and read this book. I also read the book aloud to my husband while he was working on projects around the house. He was also captivated by the stories in the book. When I saw the price of this book I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is it inexpensive for a hardback book, but it also has an attached ribbon bookmark which is convenient and adds to the book's already pleasing appearance. The text is not printed too small to read either. I reccommend this book for readers ages 11 yrs to 100yrs. It is one of my best buys.

Some 560+ pages in length, encompassing 12 adventures and 11 memoirs, this is a fantastic book. The hardback version from Sterling Classic has a nice dust cover and a sash built into the spine to use as a book mark.

Conan-Doyle is a master with the pen. His command of the language is both quaint, witty and somewhat verbose. It's perfect given the backdrop of Victorian England. London of the time would have us experiencing Hansom cabs clippety-clopping along cobble stoned streets awash with the glow of gas lamps. Conan-Doyle makes the smell of the air and the noise of the times leap out the text and put the the reader right at the scene.

Dr. Watson serves as both narrator and "straight man" as he recounts the adventures. Watson is the character Holmes uses to bounce his ideas off and, in turn, Watson asks the questions that we, the reader, would ask. It's great stuff. Holmes is usually sought after by people who find themselves in circumstances baffling to both themselves and the police. Holmes with his razor sharp focus and other-worldly insight muses and wrestles with the minutia of the case until he reaches a plausible explanation. Watson accompanies Holmes on his adventures and serves as both narrator and witness. I'm a huge fan of this work and, after reading, I'd assume most will be also.

The great thing about short story compilations is that break points are plentiful as each adventure averages about 25 to 30 pages each. I found myself enjoying one or two stories at a time then putting the book down whilst I read another novel or text. Upon picking it back up, there was no need to read back a page or two to recapture the thread. So is the strength of short story compilations.

If quaint, witty, Victorian England type text is appealing, you might want to pick this book up. If you want to improve your vocabulary, read a classic, or just drift away in wondrous prose, pick this one up.

Excellent work.

The Adventures & Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, A. Conan Doyle

A. Conan Doyle wrote these stories in the 1890s. Lighting came from fire (candles, oil lamps, gas). Local travel was by horse or foot. No telephones. Technology has advanced but human nature remains the same. The character of `Sherlock Holmes' was inspired by Doctor Joseph Bell, the famous medical professor in Edinburgh Scotland. Reading the original stories reminds you how good they are, better than any imitators. Greed is the motive for most of these stories; love is minimized. I wonder how many were adapted from long forgotten true crimes? Doyle had a library of famous crimes. His life provided examples for "Dr. Watson" and "Sherlock Holmes".

"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" has these twelve stories.
A Scandal in Bohemia.
The Red-Headed League.
A Case of Identity.
The Boscombe Valley Mystery.
The Five Orange Pips.
The Man With the Twisted Lip.
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.
The Adventure of the Speckled Band.
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb.
The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor.
The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet.
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches.

"The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" has these eleven stories.
Silver Blaze.
The Yellow Face.
The Stockbroker's Clerk.
The "Gloria Scott".
The Musgrave Ritual.
The Reigate Puzzle.
The Crooked Man.
The Resident Patient.
The Greek Interpreter.
The Naval Treaty.
The Final Problem.

I bought this Classic Book for my Grandbabies. I want them to know that there is more to life than video games and tv shows and movies, etc. aimed at them. Oh yeah, I would recommend this Classic Book to "all" of my family, friends and anyone else. Years later it's still around, and teaches as well as expand the imagination.
