Add to Your Summer Salad,

I discovered this Green Peppers album while looking for more songs featuring Emma Pollock (The Delgados/the "Watch the Fireworks" solo album). She is one of four excellent female vocalists joining forces with Glaswegian musician Jim McCulloch on this gentle, folksy, sunny collection. This is a lo-fi trip back to the 60s, and Pollock's contribution on "The Shell Song" is a definite high point (she also accompanies McCulloch on "The Liars"). My favorite tracks, though, are "Angel Angel" and "The Long Road," featuring Melanie Whittle of The Hermit Crabs and "Summer Was His Name" featuring Sandra Belda of Superete (so now I have to check out those bands, too.) Newcomer Anna Sheard also shines one what sound like long-lost folk songs "Apple in the Sun" and "In Time." McCulloch has collaborated and toured with Isobel Campbell in the past (her "Gentle Waves" moniker would have been suitable for this effort). He's surfing similar sounds here. If you want to freshen up your summer playlist without risking heartburn, add some Green Peppers to the mix.
