3.0 out of 5 stars Technical Flaws in DVD
I can't believe it's been 50 years since I first saw these episodes. I still remembered some of the scenes when I saw them again on these DVDs. I don't have any problem with the episodes or the corny acting (especiall the villians) but am downgrading my rating for two basic reasons. First, I don't understand why the opening segment "KELLOGS, THE GREATEST NAME IN...

This review is from: Adventures of Superman: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
"The Adventures of Superman - The Complete Second Season" is an essential for fans of the original series, it's star, the unforgettable George Reeves, and anyone who would enjoy seeing a series 'at the top of it's game', when it was a genuine national phenomena!

The back story is truly amazing; the first season, filmed in 1951, had taken two full years to finally reach the entire country (television, at that time, was still in it's infancy, and just beginning to spread throughout the nation, as the FCC issued licenses for new stations, from coast to coast). "The Adventures of Superman", syndicated and sponsored by Kellogg's, was a fresh, exciting series that many of the new stations picked up to help promote themselves, and sell televisions...and the series began an astonishing climb to a level of popularity that no one involved had ever anticipated.

Certainly, none of the cast was prepared for what happened; in the two-year hiatus, Phyllis Coates, the 'Lois Lane' of the first season, assuming the series was finished, took on other acting assignments, and was no longer available when the call went out for the second season to be filmed (her role was filled by the 'Lois Lane' of the 40s movie serials, Noel Neill, 33, who saw the role toned down considerably from the aggressive, feisty newspaperwoman of the first season). Jack Larson, 20, who had felt misgivings about the role of Jimmy Olsen from the beginning (only agreeing to the part when his agent joked that "nobody will ever see it, anyway") discovered himself typecast in the role, and his privacy lost...a situation even more acute for the series' star, George Reeves, now 39. During the series' hiatus, he had gotten a juicy supporting role in the blockbuster, "From Here to Eternity", only to see the role edited down to an unbilled cameo, as the producers feared a film featuring 'Superman' would lose it's impact as a 'serious' film. Reeves would only appear in three feature films during the series' entire run, and one film, afterward, all in supporting roles...with no film work at all, the last three years of his life...which provided 'motive' that his 1959 death was suicide (despite evidence of foul play).

Knowing what the future held for Reeves makes the second season of AOS a bittersweet experience, as he is so wonderful in the role! Still youthfully handsome, he projects even more confidence and ease than he had in the first season, and was far more 'kid friendly', as his fight scenes were toned down (as was all the violence, as Kellogg's responded to parents' concerns). With the national Superman 'craze' in full swing, he took special pains to remind children that "only Superman can fly", and his portrayal of the Man of Steel reflected his increasing sense of responsibility of being a good role model to a generation of children who adored him.

If the series lacked it's earlier grittiness, the second season offered spectacular compensations, especially in "Panic In the Sky", the most famous and popular episode of the entire series. As a huge asteroid plunges toward Earth, Superman launches himself into space, in a last-ditch effort to save the planet. Slamming into the gigantic rock head-on, all he can accomplish is to change it's course, temporarily...while being knocked into a state of amnesia by the encounter! With Earth's destruction imminent, can Superman regain his memory in time...AND find a way to stop it? Despite some primitive FX, the episode is STILL riveting, after a half-century!

This is DEFINITELY a 'Must-Have' collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars High hopes for the Second Season of a classic show, November 8, 2005
By
Jim Kraizel (Euclid, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adventures of Superman: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
The second season of the Adventures of Superman is now slated for release on January 17, 2006. In this season Noel Neill takes over as Lois Lane. (Neill played Lois in the Superman movie serials.) There are 26 black and white episodes, just like the first season, but this second season was a bit less violent than the first.

Here are the episodes in season 2:

<LI>Five Minutes to Doom
<LI>The Big Squeeze
<LI>The Man Who Could Read Minds
<LI>Jet Ace
<LI>Shot in the Dark
<LI>The Defeat of Superman
<LI>Superman in Exile
<LI>Ghost for Scotland Yard
<LI>The Dog Who Knew Superman
<LI>The Face and the Voice
<LI>The Man in the Lead Mask
<LI>Panic in the Sky
<LI>The Machine That Could Plot Crimes
<LI>Jungle Devil
<LI>My Friend Superman
<LI>The Clown Who Cried
<LI>The Boy Who Hated Superman
<LI>Semi-Private Eye
<LI>Perry White's Scoop
<LI>Beware the Wrecker
<LI>The Golden Vulture
<LI>Jimmy Olsen, Boy Editor
<LI>Lady in Black
<LI>Star of Fate
<LI>The Whistling Bird
<LI>Around the World with Superman

And special features should be:

<li>Documentary: "The First Lady of Metropolis" profiles Noel Neill. Featuring Jack Larson, Leonard Maltin and others.
<li>Commentary on 2 key episodes by Noel Neill and Jack Larson
<li>"Stamp Day For Superman": Special episode promoting savings bonds with a new introduction by Jack Larson.

I'm giving the release 5 stars based on the fact that the first season was very well done, and I have high hopes that the second season DVD set will surpass all our expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOULDN'T YOU LOVE TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF MIGHTY RIVERS?, February 1, 2006

IN A NUTSHELL: DIFFERENT THEMES + A DIFFERENT LOIS = A NEW TONE

We are treated to more of the same GREAT STUFF as was presented in the first season; however, Noel Neill replaced Phyllis Coates as Lois Lane and we see a true diversity of themes. Whereas the first season had focused on mobsters and crime, the second toned down the violence and added a wide range of themes to the growing Superman universe. In the process, the second season was more kid-friendly at the expense of some of the film-noir ambience.

All and all, this is a great addition and companion to the first season.

SEASON TWO has just been released. I pre-ordered it from Amazon prior to its release and and I have just completed viewing the 5 disks of the second season. The quality is the same as the first season -- almost unbelievably good. Episode 12, "Panic In The Sky" on the second disk, is a standout that also has an interesting and informative commentary track narrated by Noel Neill and Jack Larson.

If there is a difference between the first and second season, it is probably caused by several obvious differences;

---1] LOIS LANE:

Noel Neill is much lighter and more of a kid-viewer-friendly sidekick for Clark Kent, whereas Pyllis Coates was much more Kent's equal and rival. My daughter, watching parts of many of these shows -- but whole shows of none -- as she sort of flits in and out seeing parts of many and whole shows of none, stated that in "The Defeat Of Superman" if Phyllis Coates were still Lois then she would have been the one who got hit with the Kryptonite bullet instead of Superman. That's it exactly. Many of the crooks in the first season were literally mauled by Lois Lane, wildcat, as they tried with great difficulty to subdue her. Often, Phyllis Coates as Lois was physically assaulted as one would expect a man to be and the bad guys often came out of it bleeding and hurting. When that failed, there was the famous Lois Lane scream that is still reverberating all over the galaxy.

Obviously, I think a lot of Phyllis Coates as Lois but, in fairness, Noel Neill does a great job of showing a compassionate and vulnerable Lois who would surely perish if Superman were not there to save her, OFTEN.

---2] THE SCRIPTS:

The dark, "film-noir" style of the first season was definitely geared more for adults than for kids, though as a kid at the time I didn't know -- until now. Mobsters and corrupt politicians dominated that first season, with only traces of the humor that was to come in future seasons from Jimmy Olsen, and most of all from the new Lois [Noel Neill]. The new Lois did present the opportunity to change the tone of the show to the lighter side without ruining the Superman Universe in the process. Noel Neill, although five years older than Phyllis Coates, acted younger and more like she needed Superman's help while basically tagging along with Kent instead of blazing her own trail as Lois had in the first season. I have read that she was more palatable to young viewers, especially boys who found her likably obnoxious and bratty mannerisms to be cute and compelling. I guess they wanted to be Superman and save Noel. I was not one of them, and I always hoped that Phyllis Coates would return as Lois, but I had to wait until reruns for that.

---3] RUNNING TIME ON SEASON TWO IS LONGER:

Another difference from the first season is the length which ran about 25 minutes for the 1st season and has averaged over 26 minutes for the second.

George Reeves was and is the only Superman. I have already ordered Season 2 and I am still watching Season 1. Just started Disc #4. The quality is superb. It's just like revisiting my childhool as this was, without a doubt the greates TV show of the 50's. Yes, the first season is darker and more violent. Season 2 contains my all time favorite episode-Panic in the Skies, and I can hardly wait. Way to go and keep all the seasons comming.

As a youngster growing up in New York in the late 1960's the adventures of superman has always remained one of my fondest childhood memories. In 1968 I moved to Italy with my parents and for the past 37 years I haven't been able to watch these episodes on TV. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the first season, what a treat. Such scenes where superman jumps in the sky from an alleyway or when he lands in a room through a window are even more realistic than many modern day superman movies.George Reeves will always be remembered for his superb impersonation of the man of steel and his kind manners are reflected in the character he portrayed. He will not be forgotten

Actually, it's an urban legend of sorts that George Reeves's role in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY was cut down due to his sudden popularity as Superman. The source of this tale is Jack Larson, who starred with Reeves as Jimmy Olsen on the Superman show. He saw the film (FHTE) the day it opened and remembers
audience members calling out "There's Superman." The next time he saw the film, he says Reeves's role had been severely cut.

The problem with this is manifold. First, Jack's next viewing of the film, as he told me personally, was some twenty-five years later. I'm convinced that his memory of what he'd seen in that initial viewing had "expanded" over the years, particularly in light of the impact of Superman typecasting
on Reeves's career and life. Secondly, Daniel Taradash's first-draft screenplay, and every draft thereafter, contains exactly the scenes for Reeves's character that are in the film as released and as now seen, and not one scene more nor less. Taradash told me personally that he did not write a single scene for Reeves's character that was not in the final release
print or in subsequent video releases. Thirdly, director Fred Zinneman told me personally that not only was not one of Reeves's scenes cut from the film, but that not one frame of the film was cut after the first audience screenings. He was at the same viewing that Jack Larson attended and, while he allowed as that there might have been some muttered reference to Superman from audience members, he does not remember any and that in any case, there was no impact whatsoever on the film as released, nor even any discussion of the matter. He said the video release of the film is identical to the original theatrical release and that not one frame of Reeves's scenes was cut for any such reason. Fourthly, the editor of the film and its assistant director also confirmed and concurred with the statements of Taradash and Zinneman. Fifthly, several of the cast members, including Frank Sinatra and Claude Akins, assured me they knew of no such reduction in Reeves's screen
time for any reason.

Part of the problem may stem from the fact that Sgt. Maylon Stark, Reeves's character, is a vastly more important character in the novel of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. Scores of characters from that huge book were either trimmed or eliminated. Sgt. Stark remained, but in a smallish way, in the film. But it was a small part in the first place, long before George Reeves was cast. It was never reduced further, due to his Superman fame or for any other reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its about time, The Adventures of Superman On DVD!, October 26, 2005
This review is from: Adventures of Superman: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
If George Reeves had only lived to see how successful "The Adventures of Superman" became, he would be a proud man. I grew up with those wonderful adventures on television. When I bought my first VCR in 1980 the first thing I did was record TAOS off of a local Tampa Florida TV station. The prints were in bad shape and had been edited to the hilt so the station could insert as many commercials as they could. So, lousy quality and missing segments.

When Nick at Night began airing TAOS back in the late 1980's, the prints were of much higher quality but still lacked being a complete, or "intact" episode. Always there's something missing, cut out and laying on the cutting room floor. I again recorded these episodes, mastering them on BetaMax for a higher quality master. I then cut out all of the commercials and dubbed them to VHS for daily use. It was a little better, but still not what I really wanted.

Now with the release of TAOS season 1 on DVD, I have the entire first season, INTACT. No missing parts. The quality of the masters used to make this DVD is questionable, I would have expected more by way of digital enhancments (noise reduction, etc), but at least they're fairly good and ALL THERE! Better than what I had.

If you're a hard-core fan of "The Adventures of Superman" like I am, quality and content are sacred. The purchase of this Warner Brothers Home Video product was a good decision.

Season 2 of TAOS on DVDis expected to appear in stores on January 17, 2006 and I'll be there to get mine. I hope WB continues to release these DVDs on a regular schedule until all 6 seasons are available and in my eager little hands.

Thanks to George Reeves, the star. This guy is a class act and we were all cheated by his death on June 16, 1959. Suicide or homicide, we are the losers.

This review is from: Adventures of Superman: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
"Adventures of Superman-Season Two" continues with 26 great episodes. Although not as dark or violent as in Season One, this 'Must-Have' DVD set is just as entertaining with great action, superb acting, and compelling scripts. It stars George Reeves in the BEST portrayal of Superman EVER, on the big or small screen. ........This season's highlights are: ........................ 1. "Panic in the Sky"- (airdate: Nov.30,1953) where the Man of Steel must divert a massive asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth. Unknowningly, the asteroid may contain deadly Kryptonite which can kill Superman. Time is of the essence as he can only temporarily divert its deadly course! This is THE Signature Episode in the entire TV Superman series. (Writer: Jackson Gillis, Director:Thomas Carr)................... 2. "The Defeat of Superman"- (airdate:Oct.19,1953) where Superman is lured into a sinister trap by Mobster Happy King and his gang. Their evil scientist, Meldini, diabolically theorizes and proves that the strange substance called Kryptonite can indeed kill Superman. This is one of my favorite episodes as they carry out their plan to create synthetic Kryptonite! (Trivia: This same piece of Kryptonite is referred to and recovered in the episode, "Superman Week" in Season 3! (Writer:Jackson Gillis, Director:George Blair)........................ 3. "Superman in Exile"-(airdate:Oct.26,1953) using an advanced Sci-Fi angle, that was not seen before in Season One, Superman is exposed to a high level of Gamma Radiation. While he is not harmed, the radioactive Superman is deadly to any human he goes near. And to add to his troubles, Lois Lane is in deadly danger as she is flying in a crippled airplane! (Writer:Jackson Gillis, Director:Thomas Carr)................................Super Special Features for Season 2 DVD set includes a)"The First Lady of Metropolis" which profiles Noel Neill and her character Lois Lane; b)"Stamp Day for Superman"; and c)Commentaries by both Noel Neill and Jack Larson in "Panic in the Sky" and "Semi-Private Eye", the latter being Larson's favorite episode!......Super Trivia here: the announcer at the beginning of every program saying: "Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive"....was Bill Kennedy, who appeared as the Radio Announcer in the episode: 'Crime Wave' in Season One!
