About the Author

Gil Kane is recognized as one of the most influential artists in comic books, with a string of credits at DC, Marvel and other companies that includes Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Atom, The Flash, Conan, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and many others. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was the artist tapped to relaunch both Green Lantern and The Atom, and, during the '60s, he was responsible for the first mass-market comic books, including the magazine His Name is Savage and the illustrated paperback novel Blackmark. With writer Ron Goulart, Kane created the newspaper comic strip STAR HAWKS.

This is a great collection of 80s Superman stories illustrated by the one and only Gil Kane. DC Comics has done a pretty nice job of assembling collections with the focus on the style of specifc artists (and writers) whose talents have helped make their characters available to past, present and future generations. I think that the only criticism that I have with these volumes is the inconsistency they have in showing the original comic covers to the stories. While some (like this one) have nearly all of the covers for the stories selected (regardless of whether the title artist drew them or not), others (like the Legends of the Dark Knight - Alan Davis volume) inexplicably omit some covers. Nevertheless, I look forward to subsequent volumes and am hopeful that an Adventures of Superman: Curt Swan collection will be included in the future.

A beautifully put together Superman hardcover by the late great Gil Kane- I actually was going to purchase these entire works individually around the time that this printing came out, and I usually do even though, but for this one, the book is far superior!! Pick it up for the collection, you won't be disappointed.

Ok the main reason i bought this is im a huge superman fan, just ask the wife! but i also love good art and like Neal Adams batman hardcovers, DC has given Superman and Gil Kane their day in the spotlight here, a wonderful collection all around.

Art: ok first off i loved this era growing up but you hardly ever see any collections of it, most supperman trades are new stories or best of collections that has 60's and back in them, this is a hugly overlooked era, and that is too bad, because Gil Kane brought an energy to the world of superman that had been lacking, now dont get me wrong i love curt swan and he's an icon for a reason, but Kane coming in just helped shake up supes world, and now on glossy paper, oversized and i believe remastered slightly for added pop, it's never been better, plus these storries have a ton of guest stars, alien world, a brainiac who was sscary as hell to me as a kid, it's got it all.

Story:ok this is pre-crisis superman, back when he was able to sneeze alien armadas away with a...sneeze (this is not shown here) but the stories are some of the better ones from this era, superman is in big trouble more than once, he is shown more complex than many of the stories of the day, so along with fine art you have some very fun stories, the one dowwnside is many are a bit more hokey than newer readers are use to, they are not the award winning tales of morrison, but they are very good, and in some cases even great like brainiacs story, a story that had been collected in another trade (that left it as a cliffhanger, but here you get the whole thing, no partial stories here.

i am so glad dc chose to do this, i never thought it would happen, and im glad so many fans will have a chance to check this out, it's for any superman fan, fans of comics in general and fans of just good art, i hope this does well and we will see more like it, and maybe gil kane collections of his work on other heroes!

Gil Kane was one of the giants in the cartooning industry. This collection of his work on Superman is undeniably some of his best .Iin a career that started almost at the birth of the industry Kanes style was unique and compelling. His designs ,environmental concepts, scientific gadgetry depictsions are truly visionary .This collection of his work can only be deemed as eye candyThe storytelling in this collection is good but the real blessing is the art of Gil Kane .Peppered throughout the collected stories are guest appearances of other D.C. characters, characters which Kane renders at ease, what's especially nice is a story featuring Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family One cannot go wrong with this one .

While Kane's work on Superman doesn't rank among his best, 75% Kane is better than 99% of everyone else. A nice assortment of stories that directly pre-date John Byrne's revamp of the Man of Steel.

When I read the old Spider-man comics that had Gil Kane art in them, I always found them a bit creepy. I didn't quite like them, until many years later when I realised how distinct they were. Gil Kane faces are always a bit sharper and more intense, they looked like people who weren't quite real, but fascinated you anyway - you wished that there were people out there who looked like Gil Kane people and you wanted to hang out with them!

I've never seen any of Gil's work for DC, so it was very cool to come across this collection of Gil Kane Supermans!

As far as stories go, the only real highlight is a few New Brainiac stories (how he escapes from his Braini-world prison and becomes the new killer robot Brainiac and enslaves other planets, and another alternate world story of what would have happened if he hadn't become the new killer robot Brainiac... yes, what if?). Other stories are a water conservation tale from Krypton as some sort of public service message (remember this was the 1980s!), the future Jimmy Olsen and a kidnapping caper, behind the scenes of Kal-El's rocket exit from Krypton, inter-dimensional battles between two Supermans, sorceress Syrene and her husband the sorcerer Satanis (snakes, macabre jewels, Clark's death), the very cool tale of Superman's battle with Ultimate Man (the DC Universe's High Evolutionary) with the cool and ironic chimpanzee ending, the strange tale of Vandal Savage and the forgotten heroes... There's also the freaky "If Superman Didn't Exist", which talks about kids called Joe and Jerry (Shuster and Siegel?), who dreamed a hero into creation to save their world, which has been enslaved by cowardly aliens. Cool!

Lots of tales of Superman (and, in one case, Shazam) losing powers...
