I love the idea of Adventures of Superman. Get some non-mainstream artists and writers to create less heavy, more intimate stories about Superman. They don't have to worry about staying in Canon or tying into existing storylines. I gave Volume 1 a perfect 5 stars but I'm not as generous this time around. For one thing we've gone from twelve stories in volume 1 to six stories so they are a bit more sprawling but I don't think it makes them better.

The biggest problem I had with this volume is that the stories aren't that memorable. The other issue I have is that many have become formulaic and predictable. Superman saves a little boy, Superman visits a girl in an orphanage, Superman visits a sick girl in the hospital. Handing the reigns of Superman to independent artists is a very cool idea but if they don't have an interesting story to tell we get a bunch of stories that generally get a smile and are quickly forgotten about. I'm giving this collection 4 stars but I wanted the stories to be better than they are. I have to assume there was some collaboration as four stories feature Professor Hamilton, two stories feature Metallo and the last two stories share the theme of Superman getting letters from Children. If you want an offbeat collection that REALLY scores check out Batman '66.

Here are the stories in this collection.

Like Father, Like Son - Writer J.T. Krul, Art by Marcus To, General Zod makes some damning accusations about Jor-El. Meanwhile Mongul makes his first attack on Earth.

Saved! - Written and Drawn by David Lapham, The Man of Steel comes across a Superman cult that jumps off buildings to be `saved'. There is an appearances by Metallo and Professor Hamilton.

These may be fine stories, but they are also generic. The Superman you knew is not lost. He simply is not engaged in anything near exciting.
