4.0 out of 5 stars Compressors, A good book.
This is a basic descriptive book, but has very relevant information. Its to the point and very easy to read and understand.
Now I can go on to read a more in depth manual and not be lost in the sauce.
The play along CD with examples of different mixes helps out immensely.

2.0 out of 5 stars 'Limited' information, even for a small book like this
I always start reading 'tutorial' books by examining the table of contents. This looked promising. But An hour and a half or so later I finished the last page feeling disappointed. Expanders and Gates are mentioned only briefly, while the rest of the book deals with compressors and limiters. What can you tell? Most of the material is repeated 4 times or more. I think this...

Expanders and Gates are mentioned only briefly, while the rest of the book deals with compressors and limiters. What can you tell? Most of the material is repeated 4 times or more. I think this whole book could easiliy be rewritten in 40 pages. As for the CD examples: some are helpfull, but they are most of the time not very convincing.

If your already a seasoned pro, or just think you are, you dont this series of books.

2.0 out of 5 stars ok for beginners but very limited info, October 12, 2010

This review is from: Sound Advice on Compressors, Limiters, Expanders, & Gates (Instantpro Series) (Paperback)
I will start off by saying this book is great for beginners and those who have no idea what a compressor/limiter is but for those that already know this don't waste your money. This book has some basic and very limited instruction on how to set up a compressor but really doesn't go into a lot of detail about the process. There are times when I would read a line and would be like... "huh???" not because I didn't know what he was talking about but because I don't think he knew what he was talking about. There are a lot of generalizations and misused terminology in this book so be careful. In the section when he was talking about Expanders/Gates his descriptions of what parameter did what was just wrong, he mixed up threshold and range settings.

But I will say there are very good illustrations in the book that give a good visual of what is actually going on when setting the compressor/limiters parameters. Past that, this book leaves much to be desired.

So, in conclusion this book is ok for beginners but those who already know the basics, don't waste your money.
