Book Description

Meet Samuel Collins. Unsociable and aloof, the young attorney moves to the tranquil community of Hollywood Park, Texas, wanting nothing more than to be left alone by his neighbors. But between the 4-year-old kid from next door and the 80-year-old widow across the street, he quickly finds himself drowning in neighborhood hospitality. In no time, Samuel is representing neighbors on all sides in various legal matters, but when two of his neighbors hire him to revise their will to include one Landra Krally as a beneficiary, Sam smells a rat. He calls on his investigator friend to check her out, but when Samuel ends up dating the subject of his investigation, things get increasingly complicated. Samuel’s life - or death - may depend on the very neighbors he had hoped to ignore.

About the Author

I think everyone should take time to create a bio, because it makes you think about who you are and how you define yourself.  First and foremost, I am lucky enough to be a wife and mom who is blessed with a wonderful family. I work in labor & employment law as a paralegal, which is where the inspiration for Advice of Counsel came from. Somewhere along the way, I became entrenched in small-town politics, over, of all things, whitetail deer, which somehow morphed into extensive animal advocacy efforts in my community. I am a Texan, and a Longhorn, and I love to write.

As an author, my favorite part about writing novels is getting to know all the wonderful characters I meet as the story unfolds.  My characters take on a life of their own and become a part of my life, kind of like friends I'm not willing to part with at the end of the book.  So  rather than say goodbye to my characters, you will be seeing them around, as they make appearances  in my future books.  I hope you enjoy Advice of Counsel and Back on Solid Ground.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful from start to finish! September 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow, this was a terrific find! It's a mild thriller or romantic suspense, but I mostly had a fun time gradually getting to know the hero, Samuel. It's told in the 1st person, from Samuel's POV, and it was a clever way to demonstrate that while Samuel calls himself a jerk (and worse) right from the beginning of the book, but it becomes clear that he is quite the oppostie although he does have a few less than stellar moments

In addition to the wonderful unveiling of Samuel's personality, there's a nice plot going on, with a decent amount of complexity and surprises. Loved the characters - the neighbors, the kids, the friends, the love interest. The scenes with Oliver, a 4 year old and Samuel are priceless - usually with kid scenes there's a lot of false notes or over cuteness but Oliver seemed like a real kid and Samuel like a real adult inexperienced with kids but having good common sense. And there were a lot of laugh out loud moments too.

The only tiny quibble I have is that there are some typos, but I really enjoyed this book so much I honestly didn't care. I hope this author has some more books in mind!

This is the perfect novel for a mystery to escape into...you will keep turning the pages and stay up late to finish the book! The characters are so well written, you feel like you live next door to them or they are your best friends. I loved this book and was sorry when it was over...I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good, fun mystery! I can't wait for the sequel!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner, I couldn't read it fast enough May 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Really enjoyed this book. It took me a week + to read it but totally worth it. If I had more time I would have/could have read it in a day. Loved that it was located in San Antonio (were I live) so the places mentioned in the book, I know. I hope there will be more by Debra in the future. Glad my friend told me about this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Simplistic and predictable March 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Advice of Counsel has a predictable plot and outcome. I had absolutely no investment in any of the characters and, to some extent, did not care about them at all. The main character seems to be driven by his two appetites, which makes him quite stupid at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything. February 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book has so much. It starts out in first person, from the man's point of view. He tries to come off as tough guy, wanting to be left alone. However, his neighbors have other plans for him. This book has it all, suspense, drama, comedy, mystery, excitement and adventure, to name a few. I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down, especially as I neared the end. I was on the edge of my chair, literally. There are some steamy scenes, but not overly so. Great story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend this.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read December 27, 2012
By Halvena
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Samuel Collins, a young lawyer, moves into a house and wants nothing to do with the neighbours (nor with the cat that came with the house). They, on the other hand, want everything to do with him, and he is soon involved left, right and center.
I wouldn't label this as a suspense novel, there are a few mysterious deaths, but the story isn't really a thriller or a whodunit, perhaps "mystery" comes closest. Never mind, it is well written, the characters are rather realistic and likeable, the story is captivating enough to make you go on reading and it is all spiced with humour.
In my opinion it is not a five star novel, mainly because there were some passages that felt too long and didn't really add anything to the story, but still a very nice read. I liked the way it came together in the end, including the feline participation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly enjoyable find January 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Stumbled on this enjoyable legal/mystery/romance novel. Interesting but predictable. It obviously is not written by an attorney, but shows some knowledge of the field. Also it is obviously written by a woman. Those two facts are not mentioned to be negative. I enjoyed the novel even though you could predict how it would end. Good quick read. If you want to read for enjoyment, rather than education, this is your book. Attorney with several cases, romance and the possibility of mayhem. What more could you want? Bottom line, next time I find a kindle book written by Debra Trueman, I will get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars cute book / fun read November 30, 2012
By Telstar

This is a fun book to read if you don't take it too seriously. The characters are a bit 2 dimensional but they are cute and so it is easy to relate to them and cheer them on. Good book to pass a few hours with.
