The subtitle of this book reads, "How To Get Advice for Better Decisions in Life and Work." "How to" is the key phrase. This is not an easy reading pleasure book. It is a how-to instruction manual, with practical, step-by-step direction to guide readers through the dos and don'ts of seeking and giving advice.

Mixed into the the many subsections and quote boxes are anecdotal stories from Valdez-Perez's personal experience, lending real life credibility to his research. That research combines the cultural, social, intellectual and emotional influences and outcomes of how people seek and give advice.

Although the format makes it a choppy read, considering it more of a reference book helps. It can be a great resource (think graduation gift) for college students trying to decide on a career path, or a professional thinking about a career change. There is value for someone contemplating major financial decisions or other potentially life course changing decisions.

If you are about to make a significant decision, read this book first to help you seek out the right advice to make the best decision possible. If you are a mentor often sought out for advice, reading this book will help you really understand how your advice impacts others and how to help them in the most meaningful way.

This book has been on my shelf for a while, and I am so glad I finally got the chance to read it. This is a very well-written book about a topic that is sometimes overlooked and under-appreciated--the giving and receiving of advice. In this day and age, all too often it seems to be stressed that advice is something you do not need. After all, we are a self-reliant people, and the seeking of advice is no longer necessary. Not so according to this author!

Advice is something that is an art form in many ways, and I am often not too good at doing it. I was glad to read some concrete information that could help me to know when and how to seek advice. The author's advice was practical and down-to-earth. He gave plenty of examples, and I very much appreciated his view. My opinion has changed concerning the giving and receiving of advice, and I plan to implement some of what he has said in the near future. At times, I got a little bored during certain sections that didn't apply to me, but the nice thing is that the book is so well-organized, you can find what you are looking for quite easily.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

In a world where it is sometimes difficult to know who to trust, Raul Valdes-Perez reminds us of the importance of seeking advice when it comes to making decisions. His book ADVICE IS FOR WINNERS is one that I have been sharing with others, mainly because I like the way it helps us to appreciate the fact that we can't make it in life by ourselves. There will be situations that arise where we will need to get some input. What the author helps us to see is the importance of where we get that advice and what happens after we get it.

There is a lot that goes into making decisions, and one of the important things that Raul mentions is going to people who can help you make the best decisions. There is also the notion that once advice has been given that you let the person who offered it know what the outcome is. That way they know if they were of assistance to you or not.

There are some books that are in my mind timely and contain something that all of us can use. This is one of those books that fit that description. Raul allows us to learn why advisers are not only necessary but important to our making better decisions in life and work.

This is a brilliantly written and well researched book addressing a topic which has long been neglected but is desperately needed especially by teens, but which has applications for business executives.

Filled with concrete examples, you can think of this as "The Art of War looks at the art and science of seeking and taking advice."

"Advice is for Winners: How to Get Advice for Better Decisions in Life and Work" begins by illustrating how failing to ask advice led one scholarship student to pick the totally wrong University.

The book was written by Raul Valdes-Perez, a computer scientist from Carnegie Mellon University who, among other things, co-founded Vivisimo, an enterprise search engine which ran the entire online presence of the federal government (.gov). (Vivisimo was recently purchased by IBM.)

This is a book, not of advice, but a book of advice about how, when, and from whom to get advice - a meta-advice book if you please.

This is a subject I don't believe I have ever seen addressed before in a book for the average reader.

The tone of the book is rather academic and I would dearly love to see it adopted as a text book for any college which educates teachers, social workers, or school counselors.
