This review is from: AeroBed Self-inflating Trail Chair (Misc.)
I bought the AeroBed Self-Inflating Trail Chair a couple years ago hoping it would be a great alternative to the Crazy Creek to take backpacking. The compact self inflating design is a great idea but two problems make this useless for backpacking (or any purpose) - the side straps don't cinch up short enough, and it weighs too much. If the straps were right, I would give this at least 3, maybe 4 stars. If both were fixed, this would be a 5 star item.
The straps. These crazy creek style camp chairs need to be at an angle of 65-80 degrees when set up (no, I did not measure the angle but I am eye-balling it). This one only gets to 90 or greater. The result is that when you lean back, the chair stretches out so much you get no support for your back and legs. In fact, you feel like you are spilling out of the chair. The side strap design does not let you cinch the straps up any further. See the Crazy Creek chairs where there is lots of side strap to make the chair more upright to give you more back and leg support. For this reason, this product is basically useless. A simple change here would make this a good chair.
The weight. This would be a sweet seat to take backpacking but we want something light. This weighs 32 oz. A Crazy Creek original chair weighs 26 oz. That additional 6 oz. is a lot of weight on your back over the course of a day or days. Crazy Creek is now making the Hexalite series which gets this style seat down to 15 oz - dropping 11 oz off the CC original chair (that's almost 3/4 #) and over a pound off of this AeroBed self inflating!! AeroBed advertises this for backpacking and there are ways to lighten this product without sacrificing the durability too much (a la Thermarest).
