5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant New Direction in Music, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
In my ten-plus years of involvement with an innovative radio station I have heard lots of electronic/atmospheric/creative music (partly because I feature this kind of music on a show I do). Before I go into technical details about this album, let me reassure you that when you get the technology right, AERO is one of the most impressive efforts a human being has made in exploring the possibilities of sound and music.

It's important to continue my review with reassurance that this DVD/CD combo plays on BOTH of my U.S.-purchased U.S. manufactured Zenith DVD players (based in Illinois). One of them automatically switches to the PAL format when I put the DVD in it; the other one has a switch in the back that allows me to choose PAL vs. NTSC (the U.S. coding system).

Now that we have that cleared out of the way let me continue. The DVD gives you three different options of sound modes to choose from; you can select DTS (my recommendation), Dolby Digital (which I don't like very much), and Stereo (which keeps things easy if you don't have a surround sound 5.1 channel system hooked up).

Now, unless you have your technology backwards, if you choose the DTS format on a 5.1 Surround Sound system this DVD will blow you away. Hands down, this is the best quality album I've heard. So if you're having trouble you may have an old DVD player which doesn't support PAL formated DVDs or you don't have a surround sound system that has DTS capacity; note that if you have a non-PAL supportive TV then you won't get the visuals right either. The scanning of PAL vs. NTSC are at different rates; but you can choose from the menu to listen and turn OFF the video. The visual accompaniment is interesting, BUT NOT AT ALL IMPORTANT TO THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF HEARING THIS WORK.

I believe it would be worth it to invest in a nice DTS surround system with a DVD player that supports PAL formated discs before butchering this album for not living up to standards. It surpasses standards as far as I'm concerned because I've yet to hear anything that even works at this advanced standard that Jarre is setting.

Now for the audio: It is as advertised; no other album that I have has the ability to immerse me in the sound quite like this DVD does. Five speakers are used to give you depth and perspective versus the usual two; so music revolves around you and moves back and forth from speaker to speaker. Imagine seeing Star Wars in the theatre; so if a space ship flies overhead on the screen you hear the sound come from the back of the theatre and move to the front (where you are looking/the screen). This album takes that concept and applies it to music. That's the jist of it. Chronologie 6 sounds unbelievable; so do the new Aerology/Aerozone tracks and all the other works; I mean there is not a weak track.

This is a new direction in sound; I commend Jarre for doing this; it's easy to complain and knock the album down because it's hard to figure it out; but believe me, when you figure it out it does not disappoint. I have other DVD-audio material and it does not compare to the quality of this album.

Thanks for always pushing the envelope Jean Michel. Just know that there are those of us around the world that appreciate it very much! Looking forward to the next great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jarre at his best, as you would expect if you are a fan...., December 8, 2004

I have to disagree with the other review of this album, he apparently didn't go through all the options or his system doesn't support DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1.
Some new tracks and a lot of favourites re-vamped, and lots of effects to take advantage of the DTS & 5.1 options, so it is what you would expect from this artist. If you are a fan then it's worthy addition to you collection... cheers from the land down under!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good package, worth the $$, June 6, 2006
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Frankly, I'm surprised by the negative responses to the visual part of this program. The expressive eyes that stare out at the veiwer as the music plays makes for a very interesting counterpart to the emotions the music stirs-up. I suppose people would prefer the usual music videos or whathaveyou...?
The 5.1 mix is very clear and defined, although it seems slightly too "busy"-- that is, the sound mix flies around and around in an attempt to (over)use every channel. A bit more restraint and inventive use of the rear channels might have produced a more interesting sound mix, in my opinion.

The lack of decent new material drops this down a "star" for me. Otherwise, a great compilation, wonderful background music.

NOTE - I purchased this on AMAZON and have used it on 2 DVD players AND an XBox-- it worked fine on all 3 systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wait for the region 1 release, December 28, 2004
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
Fans of Jean-michel Jarre should wait for the U.S. release coming in February 2005. That version of Aero should play fine here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third Best of Jarre, January 28, 2005

I bought this pack as soon as it appeared. The DVD seems to be of little use because, although the eyes are the most beautiful and expressive part of the human body, I don't fancy watching the movement of the eyes for an hour or so. (And, contrary to America, in this part of Europe all DVD players are sold as multizone readers.)I use the audio disc instead. And what I found was amazing. The sound is brilliant (5.1). But I see no point in making the melody balancing between the left and right channel all the time. This annoyed me in some places. The sound of the album is very spatial. The three new tracks are not so original as one could have expected. Track 3 is in effect a remake of Je me souviens (same tonality and even solo voice movement). All in all, this is a good buy for those who haven't got any compilations of Jarre's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Clarification, November 22, 2005
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This import DVD is PAL format. While incompatible with the NTSC standard used here in the US, you should be able to see a distorted video image, which allows you to select you choice of the DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, or DD 2.0 soundtracks. The disc does appear to be region-free (and there is no region code specified on the disc), so just select the DTS track (my preference), turn off your TV and enjoy the incredible surround mix.

By the way, if you have the DVD playback kit, your Xbox will play a PAL disc!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chance, March 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
I took a chance on this after reading other reviews, knowing that the DVD ONLY CONSISTS OF A PAIR OF EYES THROGHOUT THE ENTIRE LENGHT OF THE DVD, This is intriguing, the sound quaility is great, so I'm happy, also the disc was originally released with the dvd as a bonus for the very reason that it only contains the eyes, it would be interesting to video ourselves listening to this music and see the comparison, cheers John, New Zealand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great music and artist - mislabeled product, March 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Aero (Bonus Dvd) (Audio CD)
This item was advertised as having a DVD with NTSC region 0. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. Product DVD is PAL. Unknown region. It will not play on my USA DVD players. Tried 2 different players (Blu-ray and DVD). Neither will play it. Since I bought this primarily for the 5.1 mix in DTS, I am very disappointed.
