Editorial Reviews

Aero is a double CD format, a DVD (ntsc/Region 0) and CD in one package. The DVD is recorded in 5.1 DTS, Dolby AC3 and PCM 9624 KHz Stereo and the CD is recorded in Super Stereo. There is an optional visual element on the DVD format, which offers an unusual visual experience. A pair of beautiful eyes, shot in high-definition cinemascope, gazing out at the listener and reacting emotionally to the music...for the entire 75 minutes of the album. WEA. 2004.

In my ten-plus years of involvement with an innovative radio station I have heard lots of electronic/atmospheric/creative music (partly because I feature this kind of music on a show I do). Before I go into technical details about this album, let me reassure you that when you get the technology right, AERO is one of the most impressive efforts a human being has made in exploring the possibilities of sound and music.

It's important to continue my review with reassurance that this DVD/CD combo plays on BOTH of my U.S.-purchased U.S. manufactured Zenith DVD players (based in Illinois). One of them automatically switches to the PAL format when I put the DVD in it; the other one has a switch in the back that allows me to choose PAL vs. NTSC (the U.S. coding system).

Now that we have that cleared out of the way let me continue. The DVD gives you three different options of sound modes to choose from; you can select DTS (my recommendation), Dolby Digital (which I don't like very much), and Stereo (which keeps things easy if you don't have a surround sound 5.1 channel system hooked up).

Now, unless you have your technology backwards, if you choose the DTS format on a 5.1 Surround Sound system this DVD will blow you away. Hands down, this is the best quality album I've heard. So if you're having trouble you may have an old DVD player which doesn't support PAL formated DVDs or you don't have a surround sound system that has DTS capacity; note that if you have a non-PAL supportive TV then you won't get the visuals right either. The scanning of PAL vs. NTSC are at different rates; but you can choose from the menu to listen and turn OFF the video. The visual accompaniment is interesting, BUT NOT AT ALL IMPORTANT TO THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE OF HEARING THIS WORK.

I have to disagree with the other review of this album, he apparently didn't go through all the options or his system doesn't support DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1.

Some new tracks and a lot of favourites re-vamped, and lots of effects to take advantage of the DTS & 5.1 options, so it is what you would expect from this artist. If you are a fan then it's worthy addition to you collection... cheers from the land down under!!!!!

Frankly, I'm surprised by the negative responses to the visual part of this program. The expressive eyes that stare out at the veiwer as the music plays makes for a very interesting counterpart to the emotions the music stirs-up. I suppose people would prefer the usual music videos or whathaveyou...?

The 5.1 mix is very clear and defined, although it seems slightly too "busy"-- that is, the sound mix flies around and around in an attempt to (over)use every channel. A bit more restraint and inventive use of the rear channels might have produced a more interesting sound mix, in my opinion.

The lack of decent new material drops this down a "star" for me. Otherwise, a great compilation, wonderful background music.

NOTE - I purchased this on AMAZON and have used it on 2 DVD players AND an XBox-- it worked fine on all 3 systems.

This fine musician and gentleman from France, had forgot

what is to work to earn your money, The DVD video is a kind

of sofisticated joke, of two eyes moving ?!"·!!!

The music is OK, but I bet you already known most of them.

Please excuse my basic english, is a foreign language to me,

but the message is clear, isn`t it ?

I bought this pack as soon as it appeared. The DVD seems to be of little use because, although the eyes are the most beautiful and expressive part of the human body, I don't fancy watching the movement of the eyes for an hour or so. (And, contrary to America, in this part of Europe all DVD players are sold as multizone readers.)I use the audio disc instead. And what I found was amazing. The sound is brilliant (5.1). But I see no point in making the melody balancing between the left and right channel all the time. This annoyed me in some places. The sound of the album is very spatial. The three new tracks are not so original as one could have expected. Track 3 is in effect a remake of Je me souviens (same tonality and even solo voice movement). All in all, this is a good buy for those who haven't got any compilations of Jarre's music.

Fans of Jean-michel Jarre should wait for the U.S. release coming in February 2005. That version of Aero should play fine here.

This item was advertised as having a DVD with NTSC region 0. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. Product DVD is PAL. Unknown region. It will not play on my USA DVD players. Tried 2 different players (Blu-ray and DVD). Neither will play it. Since I bought this primarily for the 5.1 mix in DTS, I am very disappointed.

If you have any interest in this incredible composer Aero is your best introduction to Jean Michel Jarre's music. If you already have some of his albums and you enjoy his music, this album is your absolute must have. I was listening to all kinds of things back in 1976 but electronic music was one of my pillars. When Oxygen came to life I felt like something incredible had happened. Son of one of the most accomplished film music composers had walked into the field of electronic music and changed it for ever. Oxygen and Equinoxe and Magnetic Fields were all spectacular electronic music albums with quite new motives in them which felt like some strange mixture of pop music and classical movements. When I first noticed the arrival of Aero in 2004 my first reaction was that of course I had to get it but that I already knew most of the music, so I was not really expecting getting much out of it except helping one of my favorite musicians financially. I was completely blown away by what Jean Michel was able to accomplish here. He added introductions to his songs in a most beautiful way imaginable which made his music more amazing and listening to it a completely different experience. The way the music transitions from one movement into the other is spectacular. Both, concept and production of Aero are incredible and if you are not familiar with the music you should listen to it today. As soon as you love this album you need to purchase Jean Michel's early classics I have already mentioned as well as Concerts In China, Zoolook and Rendez-Vous (this last one is a bit sad but gorgeous). Oxygen 7-13 is very good as well. My favorite album by Jean Michel Jarre is En Attendant Cousteau for its title song.Read more ›
