5.0 out of 5 stars Buddy Lee's Aero-Speed Jump Rope, February 23, 2006
This review is from: Aero Speed Hyperformance Jump Rope (Misc.)

There isn't really very much to say about a rope is there? The most important thing is that one is motivated to use it, when at all possible, every single day. The sleek and light weight design of this jump rope is alluring... though it does boldly proclaim to be "Made in China", in small print, on each of the handles. The rope is a well manufactured product of exceptional quality. The plastic cord is adjustable for people 6'5" and under. This is definitely a plus since most jump ropes come in standard sizes. Personally, I prefer leather to plastic, but all of the speed ropes available sport synthetic ropes.

At first, due mainly to the method of packaging, the synthetic rope doesn't want to straighten out properly. Even after several months of hanging over a door. One thing you can try in order to cure this, is to bathe or soak the plastic cord in a sink filled with hot water from tap - being conscious of keeping the handles dry. On the flip side: The rope cord is fairly thin, about an 1/8" in diameter, offering minimum aerodynamic resistance. It is made of an aesthetically pleasing transparent black plastic tubing. The cord, which is slightly hollow (practically a pin-hole), is screwed into a connector on the handles. Thus allowing a simple and easy replacement of the cord... should you ever be able to wear it out, when practicing safe and responsible jumping techniques.

The swivel bearing is theoretically capable of six turns per second (360 revolutions per minute). The only person alive capable of performing such an astonishing feat is possibly Buddy Lee himself. The swivel bearings are also replaceable, and a small wrench on a key chain is included to perform such a task. That is to say, of course, you are even capable of wearing them out. I'll probably misplace the wrench by then, but it's a nice token anyway, I'm sure it's inclusion adds somewhat to the value of the product (if not only for sales purposes). The attractive six inch handles are made of shiny aluminum & are covered with a 2 3/4" black neoprene sleeve.

The patented swivel bearing system virtually eliminates friction. The swivel action is very fast and smooth and provides control in all directions with no rope tangle. As mentioned earlier, both the rope cord and the swivel bearing system are replaceable. Replacement parts are available at a reasonable price through Buddy Lee's website. A new pair of bearings, or a new cord (available in a variety of colors) run about five dollars each.

As far as durability goes - It has managed to survive: My stepping on it, My dropping it, Forcefully being pulled from my hands, Being thrown against the wall halfway across the room. And, after all of that, it still manages to look "like new" after enduring several months of intense usage (i.e. Abuse). Of course, the actual durability depends on how often you jump and how you take care of the rope. Practical common sense tells us: you use it or lose it. The more you use it, the more you'll benefit from it. The rewards of your labor will greatly outweigh the cost of ownership. I have since purchased quite a few of them as gifts for close friends.

There are a wide range of jumping techniques and training programs available. I would definitely recommend that any enthusiast or serious athlete look into some of Buddy Lee's educational programs regarding jumping techniques. His demonstrations are phenomenal & awe-inspiring. Incredible... it's amazing what this man can do with a rope. I would also recommend that anyone interested in this particular sport check out his website at www.jumpropeinstitute.com for some helpful hints for rope jumping in general... information & practical guidelines from a qualified source.

The most important thing is learning how to jump properly in order to maximize benefits. Hyperformance is a new word which appears to be a hybrid of: Hyper & High-performance, possibly meaning frantically pushing it to the limit... Buddy Lee's Aero-Speed Hyperformance jump rope was designed for straight on speed and anaerobic power jumping - short bursts at high intensity rope speeds of 200+ RPM (revolutions per minute). At this peak intensity, the fast twitch muscle fibers associated with explosive and quick movements are developed by maintaining an average 90% of MHR (maximum heart rate). Once an athlete has developed a basic jump rope capacity (the ability to perform about ten minutes of seemingly effortless sustained and continuous jumping at a relatively leisure aerobic pace), they can begin jump rope training sessions at the intensity levels necessary to improve anaerobic conditioning.

As co-inventor and patent holder, Buddy Lee is an accomplished Olympian. Rope jumping was always the pivotal focus of his personal training. He served 11 years in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was highly recognized for his immaculate conduct and wrestling skills. He has helped train numerous Olympian athletes in their pursuit of the gold medal. And, as a mater of fact, every child knows that professional boxers jump rope! In many respects, he is living proof of the positive affects rope jumping can have on a person's personal development. Buddy Lee's Hyperformance jump ropes are the officially licensed ropes of the US Olympic Team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing, October 5, 2006
By
Brady Witbeck (Twin Cities, MN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aero Speed Hyperformance Jump Rope (Misc.)
I have had this jump rope for almost five years now, and it is truly the best jump rope on the market. It has a perfect amount of weight in the handles to help keep the rope feeling unlike any of the plastic jump ropes. With this exact jump rope, I was able to jump to a world record in 2002 by attaining 206 skips in one minute...on a unicycle! The jump rope has never failed me, and it's options are numerous. The length of the rope is adjustable to fit anyone from a child to people much taller than me (I am 6'4"). The bearings inside the handle will allow the rope to spin as fast as you could possibly want it to spin, without the slightest problem. From my experience's with this rope, I would highly suggest buying it. It may be more expensive than the others, but the price is hardly anything when looking at the long lasting performance provided by the Aero speed rope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely the rope to use, December 25, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Aero Speed Hyperformance Jump Rope (Misc.)
Having read the other reviews, don't let the negative statements scare you away. Every since I purchased this rope, I jump 4 to 5 days a week, 20 minutes each workout, and it lasts and holds up very well. Like anything else, care of your rope is important. One, hang it over a door when not using it. Two, don't wrap the rope around the handles or twist it into a ball when transporting it from place to place. Is this a rope to be used outdoors? Probably not. Like anything else, rough surfaces will wear out any rope quicker than normal. Even cable ropes will take a beating on concrete. When jumping outdoors, I use a cheaper rope with ball bearing handles, one that can be found in any sporting goods store or here on Amazon.

One thing to consider, as a user, do you know how to adjust a rope to your height? If the rope slaps the ground, its too long. No wonder it will wear out quickly or break. The rope should barely skim the surface. Stand on the rope with both feet together. The end of the handles (the bottom end, NOT the top where the rope meets the handles) should reach no higher than your arm pits. Then, over time, make very small adjustments until you have the rope customized for you. Once a rope is too short, you can't make it longer.

Having said that, this rope is made for speed and performance. If you can't get it up to fast speeds, its your technique, not the rope. How you hold the handles, which should be near the end where the padding is located, how you jump (you don't need to leap 12 inches in the air to clear a quarter inch rope), arm and elbow placement when turning the handles, wrist movements, etc. It makes a world of difference.

I really put this thing through its paces and it performs like a champ. I do all sorts of tricks with it, and it hasn't failed me. Its a bit expensive compared to other ropes, but you get what you pay for. Besides, once you have the handles, the rope is only $5 to replace. Oil the ball bearings with a small drop of 3 In 1 oil or a similar product. It's only common sense.

If you are searching for a rope that will help you jump with intensity, and you are going to get serious and stay serious about jumping, this is the one, hands down. If, on the other hand, you are looking to skip and frolic and not put much effort into your jumping routine/workout, save the money, purchase a cheaper rope, and you won't disappoint yourself.
