Purchased this for my Mom as a birthday gift. The basil grows extremely well and produces an abundant supply. The chives are barely growing at all, and if you are only going to have 3 types of herbs, there are plenty of other more popular herbs they could have picked besides thyme.

Unlike the larger aerogardens, this one has been simplified and does not have different plant growing settings (lettuce, herbs, etc.). It also seems to be noisier than my Aerogarden classic (7 hole).

If you can afford the classic aerogarden with 6 or 7 holes, I would go with it. This model seems overpriced for how limited it is both by its 3 hole size and stripped down features.

This was a gift for my parents. They love to use fresh herbs, so I though this would be an ideal gift. They love the small footprint (doesn't take up too much counter space) and that everything grows so quickly. They are even contemplating buying a second one! :)

I bought this for my mom for Christmas and she has had so much fun with it. It's pretty much idiot proof it beeps and a light comes on when it needs water,fertilizer etc. The light for it turns on automatically for 17 hours and then turns itself off for six. They also started to come up within three days of starting them. Very happy with it!

This little AeroGrow Herb garden is a blast. Not only do the herbs spring right up after following really easy instructions, you see just what you need to start gardening in this way. The price was certainly reasonable and the fun is non ending.

Was stuck trying to find a gift for my wife, who has everything. This was a big hit with her. She loves to cook and garden so we combined both. I only with I had gotten her the larger product.

I got this during an extreme discount on Amazon's Black Friday sales. I'd be pretty upset if I had payed the full price. Mine came with chives, thyme, and basil. The chives never sprouted. The thyme did not grow well, it stayed puny. The basil did great.

Now, about four months into use, the automatic light timer is no longer accurate. It seems to turn on and off at random. I intend to unplug and clean it, then let it sit for a month and try some new seeds (peppers). Maybe it just can't take 4 straight months plugged in.

I would love this product if it hadn't stopped working within 3 weeks of receiving it. Things seemed to be going well but after a few weeks the light turned off and never came back on. Made a call to customer service and they said they would send a replacement for the lightbulb and the herb pods which died without the light for a few days...replacements were never sent.

The light now comes on and off but not consistently...Maybe I just have a faulty machine but I guess I will never know.

I bought the AeroGarden for my wife for Xmas 2009. With considerable expectation we set it up to grow cherry tomatoes on about January 1 2010. The first thing we noticed was that, per other Amazon reviews, it makes a not so subtle buzzing noise. And the buzzing never stops. While it doesn't bother my wife, it has bothered me. I can't speak for our dog Shadow. The plant did grow with very little maintenance, but here we are exactly 3 months later and we have about 10 very small, still not fully ripe, cherry tomatoes. And they are still not ready to be picked, since they are still green. Meanwhile, the plant is not looking good. Hopefully, it will live long enough to yield something. My third and final complaint is that the tomatoes are really small with one exception - even for cherry tomatoes. I don't know what we've spent in electricity to keep this device buzzing annoyingly along, but whatever it is, it is too much. I can't yet report to how the tomatoes will actually taste and I'm not really sure if that would make any difference at all.

I got this as a gift and I have already gone through 3 different kits for more than a year now:

The first kit I had was the gourmet herb kit they provided in the box. This is simply an amazing collection of herbs. I usually put basil in my pasta sauce, thyme in my rice, and chives/parsley in some sort of soup I make and the flavor is greatly enhanced in everything! At first, I had problems with the chives because it did not sprout at all (grew some mold). But Aerogarden immediately sent me a replacement chives seed pod, no questions asked! Out of all the herbs though, basil seemed to be the best because it grew VERY quickly and I often used the leaves weekly for my meals without worrying about its state.

The second kit I had were salad greens, and the kit I am currently using is cherry tomato. Overall, I had great results in every kit I used.

UPDATE (4/17/2011): I'm still currently using a tomato kit, that only came with 1 seed pod, but it's going great! There's a really important trick that I discovered! They say in the directions that multiple seedlings will germinate, but we should cut off all but 1 sprout. I, however, decided to plant the rest of the seedlings into separate pots, and I now have a total of 4 individual tomato plants! I do recommend that you only leave one tomato plant in the aerogarden because it will grow extremely large. For a while, I tried leaving two seed pods in the same pot, but they simply grew too large and I eventually had to remove it. What's even greater is that we can grow more by taking off the suckers (look it up) that grow in between the stems and planting these. They are essentially clones of the "mother" plant and will completely form a new tomato plant when placed in soil and well watered for several days!

However, the Aerogarden is certainly not for everyone. Here is a brief summary of pros/cons:

Pros:
1) Very easy to use. An indicator light will flash when you need to add nutrient tablets (provided in the seed kit) and when you need to replace the water.
2) The instructions on many seed kits state that they only last for 4-6 months, I have noticed that it is actually quite longer if you take better care of it.
3) Gourmet herb kit contains plentiful amounts of each herb, especially the basil.
4) You can also manually keep the light on/off. I tend to keep the light on during the night so it acts as a night light for me. Then during the day, the light will turn off and it will receive sunlight from the window.

Cons:
1) Water indicator light is not very reliable. It will often turn on when the water level is so low that it has already had adverse effects on the plants. Therefore, you must check the water level regularly. I highly urge you not to purchase this product if you leave for long periods of time. i have noticed the water level will go down by half just after 2 days. Leaving the plants without water will harm them and the air pump!
2) Maintaining the garden itself is very time consuming (you get out what you put in). You must regularly prune the plants, otherwise the plants will grow too tall and wide, which will cause crowding of the plants to occur.
3) It is best that you do not mix certain seed kits as the nutrient tablets are specific for certain plants.
4) The Aerogarden is connected to a socket 24/7, meaning it is continually draining energy from you. (However, it is an energy star product)

I love AeroGardens. I have not yet connected this one, but have another that I use all winter. I especially love them in the winter when I can have fresh lettuce, herbs or other vegetables or flowers ALL WINTER LONG!
I usually give it a rest in the summer, when my outdoor garden is ready, but I do love the convenience of the AeroGarden! I highly recommend it!
